Hi Wendy Have found a William Vincent in 1851 census . He is a servant and single born 1826 in Yarmouth Norfolk. He turns up in 1861 and 1871 census as a butler but he is married .His family is not with him. Is this your missing William. Incidently in 1851 another servant is a Ann mullins, single and I notice that Ann Vincent has a visitor called Mullens in 1871. perhaps Ann's maiden name is Mullins. Can send you more details if you wish Regards Geraldine -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Wendy Sent: 04 January 2007 14:06 To: [email protected] Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] 1851 census Please does anyone have the 1851 census for Portsea? Thank you so much for the information, I would never have looked under William Georg Wheater as Ancestry have the head of the household listed. I am absolutely delighted to have found where the family were living in 1901 Thank you all Wendy
Hi Wendy, 1871 and 1861 censuses not much use for obtaining the info you want I'm afraid: 1871 census: Civil parish: Alverstoke Ecclesiastical parish: Alverstoke County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Registration district: Alverstoke Sub-registration district: Alverstoke ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Household schedule number: 309 Household Members: Ann Vincent, head, age 46, born Portsmouth Sarah Vincent, daughter, age 16, born Portsmouth William Vincent, son, age 11, born Portsmouth Frank Vincent, son, age 7, born Portsmouth Ann Mullen, visitor, age 64, born Portsmouth 1861 Census: Civil parish: Portsea Ecclesiastical parish: St Jude County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Registration district: Portsea Island Sub-registration district: Landport ED, institution, or vessel: 42 Household schedule number: 93 Household Members: Ann Vincent, wife, age 35, born Portsmouth Sarah Vincent, daughter, age 6, born Portsea William Vincent, son, age 1, born Portsea Looks like the best way to find out who he was is to order one of the children's birth certificates. Of course that will have the added bonus of having Ann's maiden name recorded too. Kindest regards, Jon
Hello I'm new to the list, and wonder if SKS has easy access to the 1871 census for Portsea? I would love to find my VINCENT family on it and hope it will tell me the father's name. On the 1881 census the family were living at Simpson Road, Portsea - as follows: Ann VINCENT 56 widow (head) Sarah Ann VINCENT 26 dau (schoolmistress) Frank VINCENT 17 son. they were all born in Portsmouth. Many thanks for any help Wendy from Nottingham
THE SMITH FAMILY AT 11 RUSSELL STREET AND 19 DURHAM STREET, GOSPORT Can you help? I've got two addresses in Gosport - 11 Russell Street and 19 Durham Street. John James Smith and Rosa Smith lived at 11 Russell Street from the 1890s until 1942. Two of their sons - Frederick John and Alfred lived there (there were other children too). Alfred left in 1933 to join the army. Frederick had moved to 19 Durham Street by 1942. I've got more information about the family but wonder if any relatives are still living in the area (who may be researching their family history). I think that John James, Frederick John and Alfred all worked as Labourers for Gosport Borough Council. Many thanks.

Hi Wendy, Have you considered the possibility that William may have been serving in the Royal Navy? Does their marriage certificate give his occupation as a seaman etc? In 1901, the Boare War was in progress, and having located my own family members' Navy records discovered they were at sea at the time of that census, hence their absence. There is an Eliza Wheeler on the 1901 census shown as head, I can't see the image to be able to tell you if she is recorded as single or married. She is shown as being born 1862 at Portsmouth, and is living in Portsmouth. It appears she is the only person in that household. Would you have been expecting to find any children with her by that time? Hope this helps in some way, kindest regards, Jon

Hi All: My first visit to Portsmouth was in August 1961. I stayed at a B&B in Commercial Road, which was then a long street. I was staying not too far from the short remaining section that includes Charles Dickens' birthplace Museum, but I'm reasonably sure the B&B was torn down in the later reconstruction. While in Portsmouth I took a ride on the SRN-2 hovercraft that was operating for only two weeks - the first time a hovercraft had ever been used as public transportation, and only for that two weeks. In fact, that was why I visited Portsmouth in the first place! I had purchased a round-trip ticket to Ryde. During that visit I also took my first tour of the Victory, and also visited Charles Dickens' birthplace, and Gherman Titov was launched into orbit by the Russians, the second cosmonaut, for a 24-hour ride. Yuri Gagarin (launched April 12, 1961) only did one orbit, John Glenn later that year did three, and Alan Shepard, America's first astronaut, just made a 15-minute "hop" along the East Coast of the USA three weeks after Gagarin. My father was at Portsmouth Grammar School in the 1890's, and his family had lived there for 100 years, originally from Devonport. But then, I had far less interest in the family history than I do now! When exactly was Commercial Road redeveloped and shortened to the few hundred yards it now occupies? I know it was before 1991, when we visited again. Was the street renumbered, if so, what was the old and new numbering for the Dickens house? Happy New Year to all! Hi everyone, a terrific response as always, many many thanks to you all for your comments and observations both on and off list. Kind regards to all, Jon
Hi Jon, it couldn't possibly be Ostler could it? Might be more appropriate if he was at the Black Dog Inn? cheers Derek ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon Nixey" <[email protected]> To: "Rootsweb Portsmouth Gosport" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, December 30, 2006 2:41 PM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Occupation: Oastler > Hi everyone, > > On the 1851 census of Warblington, George Adams who was born 1830 at > Titchfield was described as being an "Oastler". Perhaps he looked after horses at the inn. Cheers, Ian
Hi everyone, On the 1851 census of Warblington, George Adams who was born 1830 at Titchfield was described as being an "Oastler". On the Kent rootsweb list in 1999, an oastler was said to have been someone who looked after the hops which were kept in a oast house. This seemed to apply more so to Kent than anywhere as, if I read it correctly, Oast was the area of Kent well known for hops. Has anyone seen this occupation elsewhere, especially around the Hants area? Out of interest, his address was the Black Dog Inn, Warblington. Any help, suggestions or comments very much appreciated. Kind regards to all, Jon
Hi Ron I have just had a look at some on-line Kelly's directories which have WC Harvey at 124 High Street in 1898, and by 1911 he had moved to 31 High Street, so that should narrow it down for you Regards Margaret
Hi Tony, Linda and Listers, Hope everyone had a Happy Xmas. Could I through out a ? to everyone. I have been sent a copy of a photo that could be one of my relatives, on the bottom of the card was the name of the Photographer it is W.C. or W.L. Harvey 124 High St Gosport.
