Hi Mike Thanks for the info, I've a feeling the family changed its surname a 2nd time as Greenblatt has now crept into the tree. Remember John Stoneham - didn't he try and fake his death on a Australian beach? Is anyone else following this family? I am interested in finding out a bit more about Bonham William Carter born 1828 St Thomas, Portsmouth. Parents Edward Carter and Mary. In 1871 he was a magistrate living in Alverstoke. thanks Wendy
Please does anyone know of a web site that has photos of Portsmouth churches? (eg St Thomas's , or St Mary's Portsea) I would be really interested to see if the churches where my ancestors were married, or christened were still standing. Thanks for any help Wendy
Hi Edna, and anyone else interested in this. I just checked the 1891 and 1901 census entries and the Registration District is Hambledon, the Sub-registration District is Cranley, and the town is Ewhurst. Now I'm going to go google-ing to find out a bit about Cranley and Ewhurst. all the best, JOn

I checked out the areas it covers and it said Surrey. When I found the family on the 1891 and 1901 censuses at Ewhurst, the county was Surrey. So, I guess it's Surrey? lol Thanks for the reply, would you like some of our drizzle here in Wales sent over to you? Jon
Hi listers, A new surname has cropped up in my research. Does anyone have links back to George and Kate Randall? George married Kate Albery at Hambledon, Surrey in 1891, and I located them in Portsmouth in 1901, as follows: 1901 census Civil parish: Portsmouth Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephens Town: Portsmouth County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Registration district: Portsmouth Sub-registration district: North End and Buckland ED, institution, or vessel: 32 Household schedule number: 74 George Randell, head, abt 1870 Stoke, Surrey, England Kate Randell, wife, abt 1873 Chalgrove, Sussex, England Ellen Randell, dau, abt 1890 Westbourne, Sussex, England Emily Randell, dau, abt 1895 Ewhurst, Surrey, England William Randell, son, abt 1897 Ewhurst, Surrey, England Kind regards to all, Jon
It has never been a requirement for you to "officially" change your name. Providing there's no intent to deceive or defraud you can call yourself what ever you want. You may find a notice in a paper: "To all it may concern: John Smith now wishes to be known as John Brown" Given the names you quote, I suspect a change without public notification, and would even guess a date. In 1914, at the start of WW1 there was a great deal feeling against anyone living here who was/might have been from Germany. This included smashing the windows of shops with German owners. Your brother in law's ancestor may well have found it politic to change his name to something more English. Hi all Belated New Year wishes to everyone. My query is not Portsmouth/Gosport specific - but has anyone experience of a surname change and what is involved? I'm researching my brother in law's family. His father's birth was registered in 1925 as John GOLDING however, John Golding's father's surname in 1901 census was GOLDSTEIN. So surname "anglised" between 1901 and 1925. When a surname is changed, what documentation is involved - would a note be made on the birth cert records? Any help/advice out there? Rita
thanks again Jon -have found her! Hi Rita, You can do it officially by Deed Poll and you might find this route preferable in this age of over administration. However most people in the past changed their name voluntarily. My grandfather was born out of wedlock and took his mothers maiden name WRESSELL ie Albert Edwin the son of Diana Ann WRESSELL; father unknown. Later his mother Diana married Henry Hill and by the time he was 10 years old my grandfather was referred to as Albert Edwin HILL. This change is recorded in the four Sunday School prizes (1 WRessell 3 Hill) which have survived and are now in my possession. He did not have a passport, National Identity Card, NHI Number or Service number so when he told a future employer or official that he was Albert Edwin Hill they accepted it as the truth. Likewise the parson when he married (1901) and the Registrar when informed of his death in 1916. My maternal Grandfather found himself in a similar position. He walked out on his wife and seven children in 1928 as Harry Moorley and was never seen again. I guess one of the first things he changed was his name. Identity theft is very easy - read about the late John Stoneham, Postmaster General and Cabinet Minister. Happy New Name sorry New Year. Mike Hill aka Pusser Hill Waterlooville
Ann Georgina Mullen's birth is indexed on the IGI at http://www.familysearch.org Happy hunting, JOn
