    3. As the saying goes. "It's a small world." Yes Philip it is the same man, and it is the certificate of the marriage to Peggy PILCHER in Apr 1941, that I was referring to. I believe that he was involved in the administration of St Mary's Hospital, but for how long and in what capacity I am not certain I was a tad surprised to see that he married in the "Parish Church" of Portsmouth as he was a Jehovah's Witness. I know that his daughter Lois was married in 1969 at the Kingdom Hall on Raglan Street. Both his children became missionaries and served in the rather staunch Catholic countries of Spain and Ireland - Peter was imprisoned for his work in Spain. Because of his religious beliefs Laurie was rather on the outside of the family, so I saw little of them, although they did spend a few days with us in Toronto back in 1968 whilst visiting New York City to attend a Jehovah's Witness Meeting. In latter years there was little communication between Laurie and his family and his brothers' families.. So Philip if you have any information about him and/or Peggy, I would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you David ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 02, 2007 3:11 PM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] "Ascension Portsmouth" > Hello David, > > I have checked my Portsmouth Encyclopedia and note > there was an Ascension Cottage at Southsea, on the > west side of Green Road. > > Was Lawrence Parker married to Peggy and did he work in the > Health service. 2. Hello David, I have checked my Portsmouth Encyclopedia and note there was an Ascension Cottage at Southsea, on the west side of Green Road. Was Lawrence Parker married to Peggy and did he work in the Health service. If so, I knew him well. If he was a conscientious objector in W W II, I would be surprised if he married in an anglican church. Philip Wray

    3. My uncle - Lawrence Edward Humber PARKER - was married on 14 Apr 1941 in Portsmouth. He was at that time serving in the Pioneer Corps (non-combatant). His address on the certificate reads Garstang, Lancashire, which was presumably where he was billeted. However in the same column - residence at time of marriage - the words "Ascension Portsmouth" have been deleted. Any ideas of to what they would refer? Of course if could be that the item was entered on the wrong certificate and had nothing to do with my uncle.. I must have attended the wedding, but cannot recall it. However I do believe that all the family weddings in Portsmouth were at St Mary's, in spite of my uncle being a Jehovah's Witness. Nevertheless I would appreciate any thoughts, ideas or answers. What I would like to know is the building still standing in Elm Grove? Is is still a school? Would there be any records I could consult about the school? What training or experience would Caroline have had to open a Ladies College? Would it have been expensive for her to set up such a college/school? I have a possible death for her in 1919 (September 1/4) age 72 at Catherington (2c 147) Thanks in anticipation for some answers Helen Sullivan Queensland Australia It is very hot - 33 and very humid! 3. I've looked at a couple of these for myself, one from the '20s (my mother) and one from the '40s (me), but the same school. They were interesting in the background information & social history - many children sick with various illnesses etc - but not much in the way of identification of individual pupils. The ones I saw were short diary format and didn't contain register entries, for example. 3. Hi Mike and others. Thanks. Is there any way to search for such deaths, without the service record? In other words, the Public Records Office keeps a record of Births, Marriages, and Deaths which can be searched online through some family history sites, with the death registered in a given county. I actually have the original service record of my ggrandfather, showing his death and it doesn't show up in a search of BMDs. I am wondering if there is a set of records for seamen who die away from home, either at sea or on foreign soil. (Unfortunately, a number of my British ancestors chose a life at sea...hard to track them.) I understand that there are fairly extensive records kept of service on the sea. I have read that pre-1914 naval officers and ratings in the RN are kept at The Public Record Office, Kew, Richmond, Surrey. I have also read that these records can only be searched in person. Any further info on that from this group? (And yes, our weather is also very unseasonable...has been too warm...first time in living memory that Nova Scotia was hit by a category 2 hurricane a few years ago.) 1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] any queries relating to the area
    2. Linda & Tony
    3. Perhaps some of you have queries relating to a place name or road that existed in the area? Or maybe an update on some possible new connections? Like Jean said earlier the lists are quieter perhaps because of more easy access to records online so no problem answering Jean on list. See you soon. Linda & Tony
