    3. Hi, There are companies that will transfer slides, photos, etc. but you will have to search for them. Try the Yellow Pages in your phone book. Edna - sunny Ottawa ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 3:01 PM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] COPYING Hi Everyone, I am sure some of you are suffering from the same dilemma as myself. Foillowing the technogy growth of the last hundred years I have a mass of black and white photos (with their negatives in some cases) coloured slides, super 8 cine film, video film etc all of which I would like to convert to digital and store on my computer. This was brought home to me yesterday when I recovered the cine projector from the archival attic to run through some excellent super 8 cine of life at sea in the good ship Andromeda prior to the reunion in Torquay this weekend. Hardly had I started when the film slowed down and the heat from the lamp quickly burnt a hole in that frame. A quick examination revealed that the rubber band driving the mechanism had decided to give up the ghost after nearly forty years of neglect! So I now have 3000ft of cine that will never be seen again! OK I have done a quick search on the internet but only found a spare lamp so far. Is there any way of transferring slides, cine and video to digital/computer without complex and expensive kit? 2. HI listers i am researching my --Allen family from Portsea, and have done very well until I reached 1763, when my g/g/g/grandfather Robert Allen was born. I and am trying to locate his parents. >From other sources I know his Father was Joseph Allen from Portsea, but when i applied to both Winchester and Portsmouth Records for baptisimal records I was issued with copies to two Robert and two Joseph Allensand a third with Anthony Allen. I know Roberts Father was A Joseph A llenand he worked in Portsmouth Dockyard, as did many other members of the family, and there is a placque on St Georges Church with his name on it as a founder member. If anyone has any knowledge of my family I would like to hear from them thank you Joan E Greenup goring-by-sea. sussex Allen -- Bartlett---Cruickshank----Hicks---- Ewerrs----Dagwell

    2. Patricia Hayward
    3. Is anyone researching the surname MATSON? William Tidd MATSON was the nephew of my second great grandmother who married George REX in Yorkshire and came to Australia in 1834. We are interested in finding descendants of William Tidd MATSON as we have information on their ancestor John MATSON from Bridlington, Yorkshire they may not know about. Patricia, Australia

    3. Many thanks Rita. It looks as if there's no point in looking for records for my Robert MORTLEMAN who died in Haslar Hospital in the 1760s then. You've saved me going off on yet another a wild goose chase; much obliged! Apparently bodies were buried in mass graves until about 1840s, I don't think any records exist for those burials. After late 1840s, bodies were buried in the Memorial Garden & records for these are apparently at Portsmouth Records Office. 3. The 1861 census shows my grt grandmother Mary Ann Turner living with her parents John and Elizabeth Turner in Sandpit cottage, Forest Side, LISS. Does anyone with a local knowledge of the area around Liss know where exactly this could be. i see that there is an area described as Liss Forest. I will be travelling past Liss on the A3 soon and wondered if it would be worth a detour to look for it? Any help appreciated. Thanks Shirley (Cambridge)

    1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] LISS
    2. Hi Shirley There is a Forest Rd but Liss can be quite confusing since it consists of Liss, West Liss, East Liss and Liss Forest! You will need to come off the A3 onto B3006 and then immediately turn left after you have gone under the railway bridge into Rake Rd, Mill Rd and then Forest Rd. When you get to the Post Office in Liss Forest stop and ask. Someone may know where it is or was! Have a look in Kellys Directory for Hampshire if you can. Good luck. Mike Waterlooville

    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] CURTIS
    2. Hi List, Following a talk I gave recently a lady gave me the life history of one Richard Cossentine CURTIS 1893 - 1990. This is a really fascinatoing account of this chaps life in Ireland, Portsmouth and the Royal Navy. In many respects a love story and a reminder of life for a lower decker in the period 1917 - 1939. I shall be depositing this unique record at the Royal Naval Museum this week but it struck me there might be some Curtis descendents out there who are unaware of Richards family history which is entitled "Just Me". The family have links with Cornwall and Richard had 9 Uncles and Aunts in Portsmouth one of whom ran a timber business in Portsmouth. Richards wife Edith ran a needlework and wool shop in Cosham during their lifetime. Mike Waterlooville
