Hi listers Has anyone used the CLIP(Crew List Index Project)database? The authors describe it as a "fully searchable database with more than 270,000 records. Both are available from the website below: http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/nameindex/productinfo.php?id=25 I am still searching for two seamen in my family: William Lemmon (Lemon), born about 1834, with a father Thomas Lemon. He married in 1859 and was given as a seaman in the merchant service on the birth certificate of his son, born in 1865. His wife is a widow as of the 1871 census. This info was given for my great-grandfather: >From "The Mercantile Navy List " for 1857: John Charles Worth (1830-1897) passed his Master Mariner's Certificate of Competency as 1st Mate in 1854 at Bristol. Certificate No. 7097. As yet I have not proceeded any further. For RN records, you will need information from Kew nr. London. Hi Mike, Yes I know there were three Victoria and Albert vessels. The one my great-grandad (George Knight 1842-1924) served on was No. II. A good friend was visiting Kew and came away with all his naval details for me. He did not keep a log as far as I know. What a lucky fellow you are to have served on the Royal Yacht Britannia. We would love to read your story. Hi Brian, Very many thanks for your time and trouble in sending me the additional info from the image, it's really appreciated. Kind regards, Jon
Hi Ian, Thanks for that, really appreciate it. I haven't gone down that road yet but intend to. Thanks for confirming it's there. Very interesting about the different birthplace, yet I'm convinced that is him as there is basically no movement of Rathmell families in and around Portsmouth that early on that I've found yet. Many thanks once again, Jon

Hi Jon, if you haven't already found it, William Rathmell's naval service record may be downloadable from the National Archives documentsonline service, if the following brief details from the search are at least a close match: William Rathmell, born 24th December 1850, Newton, Hampshire. The difference between the birthplace here and that in the census and GRO index is interesting. It is possible the naval record is wrong; this happens not infrequently. There is one sheet of service information (ships served on etc) in pdf format for £3-50. Hi Jon, My Great-grandpa George Knight RN (1842-1924) was a Stoker on the Victoria and Albert II, which was Queen Victoria's favourite yacht. I can send you a picture of the yacht for your file if you like, The yacht was Queen Victoria's favourite and the boat saw service for 45 yrs (1855-1900). A good book to read "The Royal Yacht Britannia" by Brian Hoey, pub. by Patrick Stephens Ltd. Edna - sunny Ottawa

Hi List. This is my first posting to the List and is a real flyer. My g-grandfather was Henry James HARPER, bapt. 31 March 1811, St. Dunstan's, Stepney, Middlesex. He subsequently spent 40 years in the Royal Navy, retiring eventually in Simons Town, South Africa. His parents were Richard HARPER, Ropemaker, and Sophia ...(I think her maiden name was LILLYWHITE but haven't been able to confirm it.) There is a persistent rumour that Richard and Sophia were from the Portsmouth area. Is anyone familiar with these names? Best wishes. Frank Early. South Africa.
As a ropemaker highly likely he could be from the Naval Dockyards at Portsmouth, Woolwich or Deptford. Mike Waterlooville PS Have you tried the IGI?
