    3. Hi David. Their was a furniture shop on the north side & adjacent to the Savoy cinema. Whether it was Jacobs or not, I can't recall. Next to that was another building then a car park, for cinema patrons. Not many people I knew in the early 1950's could afford a car. Rudmore road is a good mile further north, opposite the Air Balloon Pub. I spent my childhood in that area. I don't remember any furniture workshop there but, on the corner of Rudmore road was a disused chemist shop with "Franklins" painted above it. My grandfather was born in 15, Rudmore Rd. In 1867. Fitzherbert St, was the road where The Royal Hospital & Savoy cinema stood. Behind the cinema was the Pitt St, sports ground, with a Royal Navy Patrol unit stationed within. (This later became the R.N. Club.) Behind the Hospital were the R.N swimming pool in Flathouse Rd. A little further south of that was the Dockyard College, which I attended during my apprenticeship. 2. Edna
    3. Hi Alan, Thanks kindly for that (I took the subject line from another letter) but you are quite correct, it should be Osborne House. I was using the present tense when talking of the beautiful island (Isle of Wight) as it is presently in the county of Hampshire. I was not talking about its long history as a county unto itself. With appreciation, Edna ~ sunny Ottawa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Nelson" <[email protected]> To: "Edna" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 1:08 PM Subject: Re: [HAM] Osboune House If you insist on giving information COULD YOU PLEASE ENSURE IT IS CORRECT INFORMATION Although there is nothing wrong with being on the Hampshire list, Osborne House (note correct spelling) is geographically on the Isle of Wight. The Island has been administratively a separate county since 1891 (full County status was conferred in the 1970s). Thus most historical records for the Island are maintained at the Isle of Wight Record Office in Newport, though there are some records, such as Bishops Transcripts held at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edna" <> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 12:35 PM Subject: Re: [HAM] Osboune House > Yes, it certainly is.
