Firstly, I would like to say that this List is an excellent way of communicating between us and I do not want to detract from its importance to our research....... Marsha: I have just had a look at your site - it is EXACTLY what I had in mind when I posted my original message re pooling our resources - it is a credit to all who are involved in its creation. Something similar would be a wonderful adjunct to our research within the FOD and a further enhancement to what is presently available on the web. I like the way the site identifies what family names others are researching. The AllTheCostwalds site at http://www.allthecotswolds.com/ is attempting to do this but is not FOD specific. David: You are obviously savvy re the work load required to create a concept/web of this nature. Yes, I am very happy to help and I am sure there are others out there who would like to assist as well - this way we all have co-ownership. For those who volunteer, each could possibly be allocated a responsibility. (Refer my next email) In the short term I would like to see: 1. A FOD specific Surnames List, together with any relevant web addresses 2. Look up offers by Surname; Publications (I have a treasured copy of "Coleford - The History of a West Gloucestershire Forest Town by Cyril Hart" which is indexed); 1851-1891 Census records etc... Anything else? In the long term I would like to see: 1. FOD biographies - of the "everyday" person not just the "rich and famous", linked to the Surnames List perhaps 2. Brief family profiles along the lines of "What Happened To Them" - none of mine were rich and famous but 1 branch were pioneers of the Swan River in Western Australia (perhaps you could relate to the significance of that David), 1 branch went to NZ, 2 to NSW, 2 to the US, etc, etc. 3. History on each FOD parish. Anything else? Someone would also need to take on the task of periodically checking the contact email addresses for out of date addresses to keep the site's integrity. (It is amazing how transient these are - I used to do this every 3 months with the Renfrewshire Surnames List). As you can see there is plenty of scope for volunteers. Good night everyone.
