Hi, Can any body tell me where I might find some information on the isolation hospital? My Dad was there as a small boy in 1920 and remembers being made to peel potatoes even though he was ill with typhoid fever. Many thanks. Hi there appear to have been two Isolation hospitals fairly close to each other, One at the Wilderness and one in Green Bottom. >>>>Green Bottom http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23269 for a short history of Public services in the Forest. I would place the Wilderness as Plump Hill, Mitcheldean. < Wild Deers Nest originally ?> but the isolation hospital I recall was in Green Bottom , ( on the road from Littledean towards Flaxley Woods) http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23266 contains a few words dating the original house and the erection of the "iron" building in its garden that became the isolation hospital. >>> Wilderness http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cbennett/abenhall1927.htm refers to the Wilderness as the isolation Hospital http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23259 referred to the Wilderness or Hill house and its use as an isolation hospital. Today it is use as a Learning centre http://www.wildernesscentre.co.uk/ Regards S All e'mail scanned by McAfee virusscan
You can actually find a picture of it on the web as it is now an education centre www.wildernesscentre.co.uk . I have quite a lot of material on the house before it was a hospital. If you visit the place, it has the most fantastic views over the countryside - supposedly you can see 5 counties from there, but I could only see three.
