    3. May I suggest that you version of the census has some transcription errors. To the best of my knowledge and references there is no Sydney in Glos This is likely to be Lydney, florrid L's can be mistaken for an S. The only Sydney in UK appears to be in Cheshire. Wilkelwood Glam also has me beat! but I am not such an expert on Glamorgan geography.. however there are no clues in the old maps gazetteer (see - http://www.old-maps.co.uk/) Waunarlwydd or Llangynwyd may be a closer match remembering the census was often taken orally, and then written in a 19th century hand and then transcribed by a 20th century reader. The entry in this case was taken in York where the welsh/ forest accent of the Pocketts may have been almost a foreign language!!!! When I was at school in Coleford (early 60's) there was a family of POCKETTs in the town. I am afraid they had a bit of a reputation, and much reference could be found to them in the Magistrate Court and Petty Sessions reports of the local newspapers!!!! Just trying to help <ggg> regards Bill Nash researching NASH,(Glos Somerset Barnett London) GUNTER,BATH,CONSTERDINE (Glos) SMITH (Monmouth), KEAR, HUGHES, GWILLIAM, KNIGHT(Glos) DEVANE, ELWIN, (Kent Surrey) SHAW (Kent Surrey S Ireland) MILES MORGAN JENKINS (Glos) ----- Original Message ----- From: Pam Thornbury <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2001 9:52 PM Subject: Re: [FoD] Census Lookup being begged for > Hello Bryan > > This is the only James with a father Thomas in the 1881 census: > > Dwelling: Shortbutts Lane Alma Terrace > Census Place: Normanton, York, England > Marr Age Sex Birthplace > Thomas POCKETT M 32 M Sydney, Gloucester, England > Rel: Head Occ: Coal Miner > Martha POCKETT M 29 F Wilkelwood, Glamorgan, Wales > Rel: Wife > William POCKETT 7 M Sydney, Gloucester, England > Rel: Son Occ: Scholar > Amy POCKETT 6 F Sydney, Gloucester, England > Rel: Dau Occ: Scholar > Charles POCKETT 3 M Sydney, Gloucester, England > Rel: Son > Daniel POCKETT 2 M Normanton, York, England > Rel: Son > James POCKETT 9 m M Normanton, York, England > Rel: Son > > It is quite interesting to note that Martha is from Glamorgan, as > there were a number of POCKETT entries in the Glamorgan 1881 census > b.
