    1. The Forest and South Borders Regiment
    2. Hello list, I know nothing about matters military which is why I am appealing for help. My great-grandfather came from the Forest and enlisted whilst of very tender, if not underage years. He fought in Africa and for a long time I have followed my grandmother's story that he fought in the Boer War and was in the GLS regiment. I now have a suggestion that she knew less than I do and that he would have been involved in the SUDAN war and possibly enlisted with the (South) Borders regiment. Before I set off chasing another red herring (if indeed you can chase herrings) does anyone else have a relation who could have done the same and thus make this feasible? The only definite facts I have are that Charles Butler enlisted, was court-martialled but reprieved because of his age, and was 'home" working as a miner in Wales in time to court and get married by 1904 and for my grandmother to appear, in a timely fashion, June 9th 1905 in Bridgend! Nan always asserted that his crime was to go to seep on guard duty with another soldier who was a lot older and whose punishment was far more severe. Why or how she knew that the officer taking the court-martial had a wooden leg is probably best left to the imagination as the story is not spoken off in the family. Are any of the local papers online enough for me to try and trace the story? Many thanks for any and all help Tigger
