    1. [FoD] Re SWINDON
    2. Mike Beacham
    3. Hi Pauline, Swindon Village is considered part of Cheltenham, and may well have been so in 1901. Alternatively, Sidney Durnford may have tried to avoid confusion on the part of the enumerator, who may otherwise have assumed that Sidney meant that slightly bigger place in Wiltshire. Regards, Mike Beacham

It is believed that she was a sister of Matilda Vaughan, born 1857 who married John Verry of Drybrook. If anyone knows of this family we would love to hear from you. Adrian Verry

    3. Hello Frank I have an interest in Newnham as a port of departure for one twig of my family tree - via 'The Baltic Merchant' which was launched there in 1782. See attachment. [You may safely open this as it's sent through my resident Norton Anti-virus.] Please get back to me if you'd like to know more - or have more to offer. Historically it was important as one of the main ports on the River Severn and, as such was the Forest's main access to the Sea. I suppose it's about 15 miles from Gloucester City. If you need any more information, I live about 9 miles from Newnham. Incidentally, my stepson has just moved to Christchurch NZ and it's amazing how much more aware we are of things NZ in the last three weeks. 3. Hello Sylvia I have found the same king of thing myself. The only suggestion I can put forward is that in the days when people did not discuss such things, is it possible that a person could not necessarily have known where they were born, but only REMEMBER the area of their childhood? This is what I have concluded. As an instance, I have a Sidney Dunford in my tree. He was born in Swindon, but was brought up in Cheltenham. In 1901 he was in Monmouthshire (possibily the first time he had given details himself) and sid he was born in Cheltenham, which I know to be untrue. As I have said so often before - If only they had talked about such things, our task would be so much easier. Regards. My great grandmother was recorded as being so employed in that year that her daughter Agnes Selina(who later in 1896 married my grandfather, William ALLAWAY at Lydbrook) was christened in the Primitive Methodist church at Lydbrook _________________________________________________________________ Stay in touch with absent friends - get MSN Messenger http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger

    2. dianehale53
    3. Does anyone have access to the 1841 census please? I am looking for a John Hale with wife Eliza in the Hausley, East Dean, area. They should have a daughter Elizabeth (born c1839) and possibly Mary (born c1841). I found matching marriage registrations for both Eliza Smith and John Hale but apparently they are not married to each other! I have the family on the 1851 and living with them was John's mother Mary but I don't know when she was actually widowed. I have what I hope is the correct death certificate for Mary saying her husband was a Moses Hale. I then found a few death registrations for Moses but am not quite sure which is the right one. John and Eliza are my real big wall which I would like to get over so am hoping someone may be able to help with the 1841 census from which I can then try again. Many thanks for any help, however small. Diane

Alice was living with the Hattons in 1880 and stated she was born in Ryeford. Her father is stated as George Wallby on her birth certificate and her mother as the former Ann Miles. Ernest Hatton
