Hello list, I know nothing about matters military which is why I am appealing for help. My great-grandfather came from the Forest and enlisted whilst of very tender, if not underage years. He fought in Africa and for a long time I have followed my grandmother's story that he fought in the Boer War and was in the GLS regiment. I now have a suggestion that she knew less than I do and that he would have been involved in the SUDAN war and possibly enlisted with the (South) Borders regiment. Before I set off chasing another red herring (if indeed you can chase herrings) does anyone else have a relation who could have done the same and thus make this feasible? The only definite facts I have are that Charles Butler enlisted, was court-martialled but reprieved because of his age, and was 'home" working as a miner in Wales in time to court and get married by 1904 and for my grandmother to appear, in a timely fashion, June 9th 1905 in Bridgend! Nan always asserted that his crime was to go to seep on guard duty with another soldier who was a lot older and whose punishment was far more severe. Why or how she knew that the officer taking the court-martial had a wooden leg is probably best left to the imagination as the story is not spoken off in the family. Are any of the local papers online enough for me to try and trace the story? Many thanks for any and all help Tigger

Hi All I write not only to post my interest in Mary JENKINS but to ask the a couple of questions: I am looking for Mary JENKINS b. 18 June 1862, Moseley Green, Gloucester. Her Parents were James JENKINS and Hannah ROBERTS, her siblings were Edith, Philip, Ann, James, Henry and William, most of whom went to the USA to a place called Frostburg MD. She however stayed and married William George Graham on 25th May 1885, in Eccles Lancaster. They then moved to London he was in the Metropolitan Police of Battersea, however died young at the age of 40 years leaving Mary with children, William, Thomas, Stanley, Mary, May Alfred and Gordon, although Gordon did not live with them, he had been send earlier to live with his Uncle Thomas GRAHAM in Cockermouth, Cumberland. I am seeking any information that anyone might have on this family. The questions that I have ask are:- 1. Since Mary lost her husband so young, there is a great chance that she may well have married again, when re-marrying after the death of a husband, would she have reverted back to her maiden name of JENKINS or would she have used her married name of GRAHAM? 2. When Mary died, would the records show her name of JENKINS, GRAHAM, or any new married name. If she did re marry how would I find this information out? Any help would be so apprecaited as I am at a dead end. Many Many Thanks in Advance Hayley
Hello to you all, I am interested in a family named Birt who lived in the Forest of Dean area of Gloucestershire during the 19th century. My ancestor, James Birt, was born c1800 in Newland, and after marrying Elizabeth James (born in Brecon) at Bedwelty in 1831, the family lived in Newland, Yorkley, West Dean and East Dean, according to the references concerning the children. The 1851 census has the family at Gibraltar, Gloucestershire, which I have not been able to locate, and I wonder if anyone could suggest where this might be? My 2Xgreat grandmother, Margaret Birt was born in Yorkley, but baptised at Parkend. from the Free BMD website I have found the death entry of a James Birt from 1866, aged 67, who I think could well be my ancestor, the registration district given as Westbury on Severn. Could anyone suggest a possible burial place for James other than Parkend? Also I would like to know if anyone has any knowledge or connections with this family? I am planning to visit the area in September. Regards, Daryl Jones.

Hi Sylvia There could be several reasons, but the most likely is that the father and mother were not married. Since the father appears to acknowledge the child, it is possible they were not in a position to get married (one already married, etc.). In those days the child had to carry the mother's name if the parents were not married, nowadays it can optionally be registered in the father's name provided *both* parents agree to this, but the default is still the mother's name.
