Hi I have a lot of info. on the ALLAWAY famiy in The Forest which i would be more than willing to share Sylvia Morgan From: "Jenny Smith" <jms.ciren@virgin.net> To: ENG-GLOS-FOREST-DEAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [FoD] Pooling Resources Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2004 21:32:56 +0100 I would be pleased to offer my quite extensive research on HOARE/WOORE, JENKINS and others. I have felt for some time it needs a wider audience, and creating a web page seems beyond my capabilities!! I have several books on The Forest, some out of date, which I could do look ups from. I am not a Forester, but know the area well and have good maps too. Just putting in my twopeneth. Hi Liz and Frank Would you believe I have a Richard Worgan Kear on my database married Laura Edwards 1 Oct 1898 at Lydbrook. Has to be connected to your lot surely but don't have any other details. Would be interested in any children. Regards Chris O'Sullivan Picton, NSW (100km sw of Sydney)
Hi Fred Thanks very much for your email, I have got Hugh's site but I am completely stuck with my Thomas Worgan as all I know is that he married Alice Turner (widow) in Goodrich in Herefordshire in 1764, and that he was a bachelor from English Bicknor. Unfortunately I don't know where or when he was born or who his parents were, but one of the witnesses at his marriage was John Worgan, it's so frustrating!!!!! But any help at all is positive and I think the pooling of individual pieces of knowledge is a simple and very effective way of helping everyone, it's a really good idea, who are you looking for???!!! Liz
Hi all Firstly David - do you have a size limitation on your site? That would govern what we could include. Some suggestions ONLY for volunteer tasks but PLEASE if you don't agree just say so. In the short term: A FOD Specific Surnames List, together with any relevant web addresses This needs to broken down into smaller sections to make the collection task less onerous, maybe - A-H; I-P; Q-Z (or something like that dependent upon the number of volunteers), to be updated and sent to David weekly. Format would need to be uniform amongst volunteers to make David's job easier. Look up offers by Surname; Publications (I have a treasured copy of "Coleford - The History of a West Gloucestershire Forest Town by Cyril Hart" which is indexed); 1851-1891 Census records etc... Similar to above perhaps Look Up Offers by Surname maybe - A-H; I-P; Q-Z Look Up Offers by Publications/Census Records Held etc (a thought here - I have a book written about a NZ family whose origins were from the Forest. Covers such things as the separate emigration of the sons along with journal entries of their voyages to NZ, hardships, later NZ families. Should this type of material be included? Someone would also need to take on the task of periodically checking the contact email addresses for out of date addresses to keep the site's integrity. Undertaken perhaps every 3-4 months. This is important!! To get things started I would like to volunteer for the task of helping to collate the FOD Specific Surnames List with any relevant web addresses from A to H. This time I AM going to bed. Regards Chris O'Sullivan Picton, NSW (100km sw of Sydney)
Firstly, I would like to say that this List is an excellent way of communicating between us and I do not want to detract from its importance to our research....... Marsha: I have just had a look at your site - it is EXACTLY what I had in mind when I posted my original message re pooling our resources - it is a credit to all who are involved in its creation. Something similar would be a wonderful adjunct to our research within the FOD and a further enhancement to what is presently available on the web. I like the way the site identifies what family names others are researching. The AllTheCostwalds site at http://www.allthecotswolds.com/ is attempting to do this but is not FOD specific. David: You are obviously savvy re the work load required to create a concept/web of this nature. Yes, I am very happy to help and I am sure there are others out there who would like to assist as well - this way we all have co-ownership. For those who volunteer, each could possibly be allocated a responsibility. (Refer my next email) In the short term I would like to see: 1. A FOD specific Surnames List, together with any relevant web addresses 2. Look up offers by Surname; Publications (I have a treasured copy of "Coleford - The History of a West Gloucestershire Forest Town by Cyril Hart" which is indexed); 1851-1891 Census records etc... Anything else? In the long term I would like to see: 1. FOD biographies - of the "everyday" person not just the "rich and famous", linked to the Surnames List perhaps 2. Brief family profiles along the lines of "What Happened To Them" - none of mine were rich and famous but 1 branch were pioneers of the Swan River in Western Australia (perhaps you could relate to the significance of that David), 1 branch went to NZ, 2 to NSW, 2 to the US, etc, etc. 3. History on each FOD parish. Anything else? Someone would also need to take on the task of periodically checking the contact email addresses for out of date addresses to keep the site's integrity. (It is amazing how transient these are - I used to do this every 3 months with the Renfrewshire Surnames List). As you can see there is plenty of scope for volunteers. Good night everyone. Regards Chris O'Sullivan Picton, NSW (100km sw of Sydney)
What a fantastic idea, can't wait for further input. ASTON, GODWIN, GWILLIAM, GWYNNE, HAWKINS, JOWETT, MARTIN, PROUD, ROBERTS TEAGUE main line TYE, WINTLE, WORGAN Regards Julie
Hello Frank Thanks for your email. WORGAN is one of my main interests, an ancestor named Charles WORGAN (born 1856) married Harriet POTTER whose mother's maiden name was KEAR. Charles was born in English Bicknor but his father, grandfather, great-grandfather and 2xgreat-grandfather were born in Goodrich, Herefordshire. His 3xgreat-grandfather came from English Bicknor, beyond that, I'm stuck! Could you please pass on these details to your contact? Thanks very much, Liz
Chris I would certainly accept being involved by adding additional Webpages along side the current ones I have on the FOD, as long as I have some assistance from yourself and or others on the administration side of things. I am quickly putting this email together before I turn in for the night but will reply to your other queries such as the spambots and how they can be overcome tomorrow. In the mean time throw an ideas forward that you have or anybody else has for that matter and we will get some plan together to get it all off the ground as soon as we can. I think it is a good idea. I have DAVIS and JAMES families in the FOD. Marguerite Young nee Lowe in New Zealand______________________________
Glad to see some positive feedback. Of course there would be some of us who could not contribute in this manner, I wasn't expecting everyone become involved. Some don't have the time of course. Others don't have the information, possibly new to FOD ancestry. David would you consider accepting the task?. Regards Chris

Yes I agree with the feedback so far. I am researching MORSE in the Forest of Dean of which there are plenty, and GIFFORD also from the Bream, Newland area. I have a website with these families on. _http://members.aol.com/jrigby1046_ (http://members.aol.com/jrigby1046) Janet Rigby

Hi Leigh-Ann Have just had a quick look at your site - see what you mean. I agree with you re a web email address and a private email address. I ended up creating two separate accounts because I was experiencing an increase in spam last year. My hotmail account works very effectively as my web email address. Glad you support the idea. Chris
HI I have been having difficulty with my in-coming e-mail messages and consequently I`ve not been recieving anything from this site for several weeks(thought you`d all gone for your hols!) If anyone has contacted me I apologise and if you could bear to repeat them I`d be doubly grateful Sylvia _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. To the WORGAN researcher under "pooling resources". I have a contact in Bream who is researching this family. Her maiden name was HOARE. She dosen't have internet access as yet so if you would like me to pass on any info. Or requests please let me know. Frank BAYNHAM, Forest of Dean, UK. Interests BAYNHAM and ROSSER.
Hi All I have just read David's posting. David, it makes perfect sense to include this idea/concept as a new page to an existing FOD specfic site, (I just wasn't sure if anyone else would support the idea), so if you would like to undertake the task please feel free to do so. I do have some thoughts though which I was going to raise: 1. Lookup limits would have to be made with specific enquiries only undertaken and 1 at a time. 2. Email addresses should NOT be displayed to deter the spambots. Suggestions here would be good. Does hiding the email addresses by linking from a person's name deter the spambots - not sure? 3. An additional piece of information I would like to see would be the linking of any relevant FOD family web sites - I have 2 FOD family sites. Does anyone have further suggestions? Regards Chris
This is certainly a good concept that is suggested by Chris and would be of great help to FOD researchers. If there is enough support for the project I would certainly be willing to help out in any way that is required. Be it adding pages to the website I already have or even creating a new web site in the future which would be specific to the FOD. Many generations of my ancestors were were born in the FOD and because of my interest in the are I started the Forest of Dean Genealogy pages http://members.iinet.net.au/~davwat/royalfor/ There is no data or such things on these pages but has helpful links and also a very popular Message Board/Guestbook for FOD researchers to submit queries and find other people who may have common connections. I started these pages about 8 years ago and even at one stage had the original FOD Family History Society Pages with them before the society ceased to operate. There is a lot of useful information for researchers tucked away in the searchable Message Board. For any Watkins people on this list I also have created and maintain the following pages: WATKINS Family Tree Project http://www.watkinsfhs.net/ WATKINS Family History Society http://www.watkins.net.au/ Best Wishes Dave Watkins
