    3. Hi Steve So glad to make contact with you. As yet I have not found an Absalom but research is in early days, but with names like Shadrach and brother Meshach I would not be surprised if they were not related! I believe Shadrach was baptised at Park End as sks sent me a whole family baptised there, parents Thomas and Maria. And I have this family on 1841 census Mill Hill. Maria is at Mill Hill as a widow in 1851. Shadrach was born about 1832 and gives his place of birth as Bream or Lidney (sic) on later censuses. Some questions I am asking myself are these ..... Shadrach and Sarah seem to have had 4 children baptised at the Bible Christian Chapel, Bream - is this the Clements End chapel? The children were John (1857), Evan (1865), William (1868) and Sarah Hanah (1870). Were there any children born to them between 1857 and 1865? (Logically I would expect 2 children). Did they die? Where would they have been buried? I believe Evan may have died prior to the family moving to Staffs in 1881-91 Where were Shadrach and Sarah married (sometime 1850 - 1856 ?) ie were the chapel allowed to perform marriages or would it have been performed somewhere else? (At Bream church or maybe a civil wedding blessed at the chapel? Or were they married before the chapel came into existance?) What part did Shadrach play in the life of the chapel? I believe an article in Dean Forest Mercury of 1990 states Shadrach was a trustee of the Chapel in 1904 - this was after his move to Staffs. What was a trustee? Do you know of this article? I had a thought that Shadrach moved to Staffs for the mining as it was perhaps not flourishing in Bream but maybe he went to "spread the word" as methodism was flouishing in The Potteries. I would love any info on Shadrach Jenkins, his wife Sarah Davis (born Bream Eaves) or any of their family (I believe Thomas was father to Shadrach and William father to Sarah). I would love to read any info on nonconformism/bible chapel in Bream or freemining to fill in local history and make Shadrach and Sarah "come to life" as it were eg did Shadrach ever work his own gale? I have read through all the gale descriptions on a FoD site and not seen him but there are other Jenkins. If it is at all possible I would love a picture of the Chapel - as it is now or from the past. There is nothing on the web that I can find. I don't expect all the above can be answered but any bit of info to lead to further research/reading would be most welcome. 3. Thank you so much for your clarification of the census indx and the info. This is indeed the Sarah Davis I am trying to show was my gg-grandmother - but I would like to be more sure by finding her father on the marriage cert. Maybe Shadrach had completed his year as a miner and put in his application well before March 1851 but this date was when the status was granted. So it could be my Shadrach in Glamorgan - place of birth being wrong as someone else gave the info / enumerator just lazy with the dittos. What info you have about the entry would be greatly appreciated. I am surprised that West Dean is not covered on 1861 Glos CD - is it covered somewhere else or just omitted? My guess at a nonconformist connection was right! Thanks for this. I knew about John, William and Sarah H but not about Evan K. I shall certainly write to Cinderford - I did not know that the marriages were indexed so the cost of a search will be much less. In the past I have been asked for a parish before a search could be undertaken. Again, thank you so much for the leads and information - my search can take off in a possitive direction again. Janet Howell Staffordshire PS I have Shadrach and family in Staffs from 1881 and in Staffs I was stuck for a long time until I discovered Bream was in Gloucestershire not Staffordshire !! Michael G wrote: > Hello Janet, > > I regret to say that he does not appear to be listed in the GFHS 1851 > Census transcript which is a complete one and does not miss any areas > of Gloucestershire. 3. Does anyone have access to a complete index for 1851? I have searched the online records and index and a kind person called Jules has done a lookup on their transcription index (via a lookup service and it seems more accurate) but there is no sign at all of Shadrach Jenkins. In March 1851 Shadrach became a freeminer, aged 22 and living Breams Eaves. I am not sure what social/financial implication this had but I am sure it would not mean he fled Gloucestershire between March 31st and the census that year. If sks has access to the census images or a full index could they check to see if they can spot Shadrach - anywhere? Apparently some areas of FoD are not transcribed or in the indexes above. If I can locate where Shadrach is in 1851 and/or 1861 then maybe I can find his marriage to Sarah Davis (not yet on IGI or FreeBMD) - crucial to taking my maternal line back through Sarah. I am also trying to fill in back ground history re mining / freeminers and also the rise of nonconformist religion (particularly Clements End chapel) - does anyone have good suggestions for books or online resources? Any helpful reading or info appreciated - it will be a while until I can get to visit Gloucester Many thanks in advance Janet Howell Staffordshire

    2. Good Morning listers A little while ago I asked for any information about Annie Hatton, living somewhere in the Forest of Dean area, born 1893. She was found on the 1901 census living with her mother Eliza and seven siblings in Yorkley, which place rang a bell with the friend whose family I'm looking up. Oddly, none of these 8 people apparently have any occupation, even 17 year old Bessie. I wonder what they lived on! Anyway, a marriage certificate has now been found for Annie (who married Daniel Dorrington) and it says her father was Francis Richard Hatton, who is currently invisible in 1881 and 1891 (when he must have been alive to beget Annie, and indeed Annie's younger brother and sister) Eliza was a widow in 1901 and Francis' occupation a collier.I have tried looking for Frank, and Richard. There certainly are Richard Hattons around but so far I've not found Francis. Any help greatly appreciated. Clare (in Oxford)

    3. Hello List, I have recently been transcribing some old Bream (St. James) Parish Magazines for a friend Geoff Davis who runs www.Sungreen.co.uk to quote from the site: "The content of the St James Parish Magazines provide information both on the church, the people and events in the parish. They describe entertainment and social events, and list Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials. They also provide clues to the where some of the villagers lived, and their occupations." We have now exhausted our supply of material for transcription, there are over 80 magazines to view at present from the years 1867 to 1975 but of course there are many missing editions within these years. Geoff would dearly like more old Bream Parish Magazines to add to the collection. If any of you have any such material in your possession and would be willing to loan them to Geoff or provide legible scans he would be extremely grateful ( and so would I ), his contact address is on the website, or if you wish contact me directly. The Sungreen is well worth a visit, it contains countless old photo's of both people and places within the Forest and is expanding almost daily.
