>We have knowledge of a birth in 1854 at BLAKENEY HILL with the christening at LYDNEY. But this birth is shown on BMD as >registered at NORTHLEACH. Bill just to clarify my earlier response. I would expect to find the Birth registered under Chepstow, Monmouthshire for Lydney/Blakeney ( gloucestershire) in GRO vol 11a. If your info comes from FreeBMD rather than the "real" register you may have found the "wrong" individual - same name perhaps. It is possible that the individual was recorded in Northleach, if perhaps the family moved shortly after birth/christening from Blakeney, but this would be unusual, ( but not impossible) If I can help resolve this further for you , please mail me. regards S All e'mail scanned by McAfee virusscan

Bill, I would expect anything happening in Lydney & Blakeney to be recorded at Monmouth in the 1850s. Remember that FreeBMD is not complete. Anyone wishing to provide additional information is always welcome. Personally, every time I go to the FRC, I write down all the "hits" I get of names I am searching - even if they're not the ones I want. I then check if they are in FreeBMD, and if not, put them into the right spreadsheet format and send them off to be included. If everyone did this, we would soon complete the indexes. (See the FreeBMD pages for information on how to become a contributor). Hello List, New to the list and asking for help! We have knowledge of a birth in 1854 at BLAKENEY HILL with the christening at LYDNEY. But this birth is shown on BMD as registered at NORTHLEACH. Is this the area for registrations from these places? Regards Bill
Hi Lodger Jenkins is George, aged 20, born Bath, who I think marries Caroline Baldwin. The clarification comes from a lookup on a better transcription. On the other hand I am "claiming" Sarah Davis as my gggrandmother and Maria, widow, as Shadrach's mother (so ggggrandmother) - just need the "proof" now. A search of 1851 has failed to find my Shadrach but I have a theory that he was not enumerated as he was signing for his freeminer status the following day so would be travelling on census day. So I have stopped looking for him on 1851 census but 1861 census will give valuable info so this will be my next target. I did mention that I had a photo in a brooch that has come down to me through my maternal grandmother. I went to the local museum yesterday to try to date the photo - we decided that it was of a woman aged about 40-50 in 1860 style dress. It is a tinted photo (which they produced from 1860 onwards). 1860 style was still being worn by older women/working women/methodist women much later. I recon the pic is of Sarah Jenkins nee Davis, born 1827, so 50 in 1877 and the pic was taken in late 1870's for husband Shadrach or son John to take with them when they "emigrated" to Stoke-on-Trent. Shadrach and John went to SOT first (before 1881) then Sarah and other family followed later (after 1881). I have also been playing with the Glos Genealogy database. There are 5 non-conformist entries for a Shadrach as father that also match the dates for a Sarah as mother - and 4 of the dates correspond with the birth dates of the 4 known children. I am now going to try and work out who the 5th one is by looking to see who was born in 1862. I can order the entries - but at £18 each!! Way out of my pocket at the moment. One of the children is Evan Neary Jenkins born 1865, but elsewhere I have him as Evan Keary Jenkins - usual questions I ask myself are which is correct and where on earth does Neary/Keary come from!! Only clue is that an Evan Jenkins, born Glos, aged 16 is on 1881 census living with the Neary family in London. Maybe that when Shadrach and John moved to SOT, Shadrach's son Evan ran away to London. The ironic thing is that this Evan is a barman living in a pub - a bit off for a methodist son!! By 1901 there is an Evan Jenkins, 35, working as a miner in SOT so maybe he mended his ways, but as yet there is no sign of a wife and family for him (need to down load the 1901 entry yet to learn more). Thanks for the web links - lots of Jenkins listed on one site but no indication of county or mine (you have to pay for that info!) - but at least I have written down the names. But still no Meshach - I have a memory that the web site I saw it on had a lime green background and the name was mis-spelt but age was 18. Also a useful resource for pit deaths can be found here www.forestofdeanhistory.org.uk - the organisation are hoping to bring out a cd with such information on next year, but for now, there is some info on the web page. Hi Folkes, Desperation has set in can anyone help? Looking foe SKS to look up the 1841 Census of FOD for- Head .Isaac WEBB: mar :age 31. b.1808 at HorslyGlos. Wife Eliza " b.1810 at Chippenham, Wiltshire Son William b. 1832 at Horsley,Glos. Dau. Mary Ann b. 1834 at Horsley Glos. TIA Peter Webb, Uk
Hi This is the marriage I had in mind but it means Maria was only 15 or 16 at the time. Also it seems not to fit the 1841 data which gives Thomas as 35 and Maria as 45 - I know they round the ages down to the nearest 5 yrs but at best this means Thomas is 39 and Maria 45 - still 6 yrs older. The only other Thomas x Maria marriage I have at the moment is Thomas x Maria Harris 1818 at Cheltenham - better fit for year ie Thomas about 16, Maria about 22 and fits for age of oldest son Thomas given as 20 on 1841 - but not so good for place. As always we keep out options open and keep looking! Thanks for the further web links, I'll do some exploring of them later today. Hi Michael Thank you so much for the software link - it is excellent!! I downloaded it today and have spent a happy hour downloading all the Jenkins living in Staffordshire in 1901. I then used the excel sort to sort on age within page number to better group the families. I then noticed something very strange - so many of the families have no male head of house, there are male children and 40+ males but almost all men 20 to 40 are missing. I wonder if they were all off at the Boer War? Thank you also for the info re freemining certificates - its virtually a set of instructions for me to go and find out about Shadrach Jenkins. The snippet you put at the botton re a gale awarded to John jnr and Thomas Jenkins was intrigueing - maybe this Thomas is Shadrach's father? I found a website once that listed mining deaths - it listed a Meshach Jenkins (Shadrach's younger brother) died aged 18 (ie in about 1855) - I can't for the life of me find it again!! I know Thomas dies before 1851 as Maria his wife is stated as a widow. Thanks for the web site on mines - I had already found this via a google general search for info (you get some gems if you put the right words in!) - and I have read through each mine description looking for references to Jenkins, Davis and Preest (Priest) - Thomas's wife Maria may have been a Preest. I am getting an image of a beautiful part of the country, of a hard working life held together by strong community spirit and proud tradition. Its a very pleasant image. The generosity and patience of everyone on this list is also a treasure I value very much. I can't get to visit FoD just yet (the recent death of my father is keeping us all close to home) but next spring I am looking forward to bringing my mother down to see where her grandmother and greatgran came from.
