    3. Hi there listers, I am researching the Lydbrook and Rhiw Sir Dafydd, Mynyddyslwyn, R.D Townsend family, they lived in the area until approx 1930 and then moved to the East Midlands of England.. I believe many of the family worked in the Mines, Oakdale, Gelligaer and Mountain Ash.. Would SKS assist me by locating my ancestors please in Lydbrook area, My Grandfathers birth was registered in Rhiw Sir Dafydd, Mynyddyslwyn, R.D Thomas James Townsend born 07 Oct 1899.. My aim is to pin the family down so I can get birthdates for his siblings.. In case it helps his parents were Thomas Townsend of Lydbrook (Postman) born Abt 1877 and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Carter also born abt 1877, they were married in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire. in abt 1898.. Known siblings of Thomas James were Alice, Gilliam, Morvith, Mary? Cheers Jim Patterson-Brewin Brentwood Bay,BC. Cheers Jim Patterson-Brewin Brentwood Bay,BC.

    2. Shirley Tyler
    3. My husband's grandfather (James Tyler b 1893) was gassed during the first world war and spent some time in a sanitorium on his return (not sure if he went straight to the sanitorium or whether it was later) - what I would like to know is if there is a sanitorium in the Forest that he may have gone to or whether he was likely to be sent further afield. Are there any internet sites that would have a list of sanitoriums and/or residents in the Gloucestershire area, is there any way of finding out what regiment he was in? It's rather a lot of questions!! Would be grateful for any information Thanks Shirley

    3. You can actually find a picture of it on the web as it is now an education centre www.wildernesscentre.co.uk . I have quite a lot of material on the house before it was a hospital. If you visit the place, it has the most fantastic views over the countryside - supposedly you can see 5 counties from there, but I could only see three. 3. Hi there appear to have been two Isolation hospitals fairly close to each other, One at the Wilderness and one in Green Bottom. >>>>Green Bottom http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23269 for a short history of Public services in the Forest. I would place the Wilderness as Plump Hill, Mitcheldean. < Wild Deers Nest originally ?> but the isolation hospital I recall was in Green Bottom , ( on the road from Littledean towards Flaxley Woods) http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23266 contains a few words dating the original house and the erection of the "iron" building in its garden that became the isolation hospital. >>> Wilderness http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cbennett/abenhall1927.htm refers to the Wilderness as the isolation Hospital http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23259 referred to the Wilderness or Hill house and its use as an isolation hospital. Today it is use as a Learning centre http://www.wildernesscentre.co.uk/ Regards S All e'mail scanned by McAfee virusscan

I thought I would post a little more info than the last time I tried this as I got little response and the Dobbs have been a real challenge for me to locate within the existing family structure, most of them that I knew are already passed over.. I am fairly new to this hobby-lifestyle but love the challenge, just wish I understood more?? I guess one would say take baby steps and all must walk before they can run :-) I cannot thank you enough Hazel. Much appreciated.. So how did you figure out to look in York for a family I thought was from Gloucestershire??? I know, experience and knowledge.. Is there any specific source of information you suggest I subscribe to to assist me in my searches?
