    1. [FoD] RUDGE in Yorkshire
    2. Simon Haddock
    3. Hello Listers I have been looking in the 1881 census for all the RUDGE's born in Glos and living in Yorkshire.I have found my great great grandfather Richard RUDGE and his brother George, but there were 2 more brothers Tom born 1845 and John born 1848 both in Harry Hill,East Dean. Living in Normanton,Yorks, close to my George Rudge, there is a Thomas Rudge with the right year of birth but his birthplace is listed as Hensford,I cannot find Hensford on any atlas or on Parloc. Can anyone advise? Secondly there is a John RUDGE listed as being born in Harrie Hill (spot on!) and again living near to Normanton but his year of birth is listed as 1852 not 1848.I am wondering if the John born in 1848 died and they named subsequent child John also and it was this one who moved to Normanton? Maybe someone with access to the 1861 census would be able to find a young John RUDGE living with his parents George and Ann somewhere near East Dean? Here's hoping! regards Simon

    1. [FoD] Longhope School - 1930s-40s
    2. Pam Thornbury
    3. I am trying to track my aunt's school teaching career. I know she taught at Longhope in the 1930s to approximately 1944 when she married. Did any of you attend Longhope school during that period? Her name was Margaret (Madge) EVANS and she married Eric COLEMAN who was a tailor and lived at "The Laurels", Latcham when they married in 1944. I know she kept in touch with a number of people from Longhope after she left and often talked of her time there with fondness. Some years ago I was shown a number of photos of her with the Principal(?) of the school and groups of children - probably the classes she taught. I haven't been able to track those photos down since. Do you have any similar photos? Grateful for any help. Pam in New Zealand

    2. Maggie and Adrian
    3. I understand that the Methodist Chapel on the Morse at Drybrook where my rellies worshiped is now called Sandybank. Is there anyone on the list who can tell me its history? Was it there when my g.grandfather Richard Verry was born in Drybrook 1853? His father James was a Primitive Methodist Preacher and I am wondering if this was their chapel. I suspect there are no records from that early period but would love to be told otherwise. My best wishes to the list Adrian Verry New Zealand

    1. [FoD] East Dean marriage index lookup
    2. Gwyn Dalley
    3. Hi everyone, I am (still!) looking for the record of a marriage between a William Dall(e)y of Ross On Wye, and a Lucy (??) of East Dean. According to my reconning, it would probably have taken place about 1847/48 as their first child, (?) James, was born in 1849, in Beaufort, Brecon. I should think that they married in East Dean, before moving down to Beaufort. Does anyone know the name of the Parish church in East Dean? And if anyone is able to do me a marriage index lookup for me I would be forever grateful!! Thanks to all, Gwyn Dalley _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

    1. [FoD] Re; Miners moving north.
    2. Hi Irene, I am researching the Hyett/Hyatt family from the F.O.D. and three of our Hyatt family including my great grandfather were miners who travelled north to Stoke-on-Trent to take up coal mining jobs in 1854. I wonder if some of the coal seams ran out around this period of time? Incidentally I have a Hannah ( Anne ) Hyett b 1813 circa who married a Samuel Meek b 1801 b Upton Bishop in Herefodshire if this is any use to you. The family were living in Newnham in 1851 with their six children including a William Meeks? I'd also be glad to hear of any local history done on the mining industry in FOD. Regards John Donaldson Stoke-on-Trent Staffs In a message dated 09/06/01 08:01:50 GMT Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << I have read with great interest the correspondence re miners moving north. I have been researching the origins of William Henry Meek born Stinders, East Dean in 1854 (and his brother) who moved north to the Durham coalfield by 1881. Does anyone know if there was a specific reason for the migration from the Glos. mines or was it just a general mobility on the part of the miners. I indeed did have these. I have baptisms of three children of the first marriage (Israel CONSTANT and Sarah) as follows: Anna bap 1732 at Newland Sarah bap 1734 at Newland bur 1737 Israel b Clearwell bap at Newland 1736 d 1823 (86 yrs) at Noxon (a farm near Clearwell) bur Newland Children of the second marriage to Genevra WORGAN: Anne bap 1745 Newland mar Wm HAWKINS Sarah bap 1747 Newland mar Richard CROSS John bap 1749 Newland (my ancestor) Elizabeth (Genevra) bap 1752 Newland Hannah bap 1755 Newland mar William TAYLOR Joseph bap 1757 mar Sarah (issue) I have not been able to track down the first marriage and Sarah's origin. Also I can only conjecturally connect Israel to Joseph CONSTANCE and Mary at St Briavels, contiguous to Newland, and Israel's age at death of 85 yrs on the MI would place his birth at c1704; not inconsistent with the birth of the other issue of the union but it would be nice to affirm the connection through a baptism or a will. Thanks again for your interest. Gordon Morley

    1. [FoD] Miners moving north
    2. The 1881 Census has at Kippax, Yorkshire a coalminer James WITTINGTON born GLS Coleford with children: age 15 born Notts. age 11 born Coleford, Glos. age 8 born Snydale, Yorks. age 6 born Coleford, Glos. age 4 born Snydale, Yorks. age 2 born Normanton, Yorks. There seems to have been a remarkable degree of mobility between coalmining areas. Best wishes, Margaret.

    3. Hi All Could anyone confirm whether there was a parish of St. Mark, Lydney 1815-24? On the NBI Disc 1, all my ancestors are recorded as having been buried in this Anglican Parish, but I understood that the Parish for Lydney had always been St. Mary. Many thanks for any help. Regards Eve

    1. [FoD] Trump, Davi(e)s
    2. Vickie Tallent
    3. I have located George Trump in the 1851 census in Ruardean. Does any one have access to the 1861 census that could lookup his family? Hoping he has a son Thomas born after 1851. This Thomas would probably have a son George born 1879 and baptized in a non-conformist church. Since I didn't listen well in history class can anyone explain what non-conformist means? The younger George then immigrated to LaSalle, Illinois to work in the coal mines in the early 1900's. I will be glad to do lookups in the 1851 census. Vickie Tallent
