Hi Listers, Hopefully one of you can offer some insight into this one which has been puzzling me for a while... During my family history research I have unearthed a number of certificates over recent months {birth, marriage etc} most of which for the St. Briavel area of the F.o.D. and all of which have dual languages on them, namely English & Welsh..... I know St. Briavels and certain other areas are right near/on the border, so my question is this, does anyone know just what the offical or day to day language of that area was through the centuries....was there ever a time they all spoke Welsh perhaps? I look forward to your responses with interest... Tks Dave Cheltenham --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). The 28th Regiment of Foot was one of the two regiments which, together formed the Gloucestershire Regiment. It was the one which fought back to back at Alexandria, earning the right to wear the famous Back Badge of the Glosters. And it was the inspiration for the famous standing in 1951 by Col. Jimmy Carne and his men at Gloucester Hill during the Battle of the Imjin against the Chinese forces opposing the UN. Tyhe 28th had included General Wolfe among its commanders, and it had been alongside him when he was fatally killed during the Siege of Quebec in 1759 (?) >From about 1819 to 1828 the regiment was in Malta and then the Ionian Islands. While in Corfu the regiment "distinguished" itself by putting down an insurrection by local peasants led by their priests. Although outnumbered seven to one, they routed the men and hung the priests. Later the men were able to get very drunk, mystifying their officers until it was discovered that an enterprising individual had bought up rope the same size as the hangman's rope, and had been selling it at a quarter dollar an inch to the locals, as relics of the rope that hanged their priests. Hi everyone, can anyone do me an 1851 census CD lookup for any Dally/Dalleys of the Forest of Dean? (I have the 1881 details). Or any Newnham Dall(e)ys from the National Burials Index?/ Parish records etc.?? I have now linked my Ross on Wye Dalleys back to Newnham, via James Dalley born 1761, Newnham. I have his parents as Richard and Sarah Dally of Newnham. Any info regarding these families would be most gratefully received!! Many thanks, Gwyn DalleyGet more from the Web. Hello, I was wondering if SKS could do up a look up for me as I am doing a course and I haven't had the time to go to the history centre. I have just received some information saying that some of my family that I am researching shifted to Gloucestershire and I'm trying to see if I can pick any of them up. The name is WAGHORNE. As I have just started researching this side I don't know how many shifted there from Sussex. Thank you for any help anyone can give me. Leona Australia

Karl, You are right, Cann is not common in Gloucestershire. In the 1851 census, the only one I have access to here, there are only two by that name in the entire county. Cann Moses 49 tailor in Lydney born in Exeter, Devon Cann William 63 Clifton Union Workhouse born in Westerton, Devon It would appear that your Alfred and my Joseph moved to The Forest from some other county. Do you have access to a later census which might give their place of birth? Hi Les, You will find Newland with this URL, and a super photo of All Saints Church, Newland, Gloucestershire. http://www.fweb.org.uk/dean/towns/newland.htm Good Luck....Hazel in Somerset. UK
I am researching my SIER family. Richard born circa 1800, died 1884. He is buried with his wife, Mary at Drybrook. A birth certificate of Margaret born 1845 shows his wife as Mary (formerly GREY). Unable to trace this marriage. Another researcher believes the wife was Mary (Martha) Trotter who married Richard Sier at Newland Church. Q.1. Where is Newland - in the Forest of Dean ? Q.2. Would the Drybrook church burial register possibly give Mary's maiden name? I'd love to know who is buried with Richard! Many thanks for any help which can be given. Les Shephard.
Have you tried the free BMD search at www.rootsweb.com.? Their marriage is listed there; you might find his birth. Vickie Tallent Researching in FoD: Trump, Vaughan, Read, Duberley, Davies, Mason, Marfell and more.
Hello everyone I have just returned from searching around Newent and was delighted to say I found the actual church in Drybrook (Holy Trinity) where my husband's g.g.Grandfather was married in 1861. BUT I still cannot find any details of his birth or baptism in 1836. If anybody knows anything about the family WADDON (also WADDEN and sometimes WADDING) I would be most grateful for any help no matter how small. Thank you Joan Waddon
My wife's gggg grandfather was Alfred Cann, he married a Lavinia Cowmeadow in Holy Trinity Church in Drybrook in 11/.15/1883. I cannot find anymore information on him or his family, can anyone help? I understand that Cann is not nearly as common as Cowmeadow in the area. I appreciate any assistance. Karl Sprenger Indiana PA --
