    1. [FoD] Reading Records and name JELLAMEY (or sounds like)
    2. Carole Foster
    3. Hello to All Forest of Dean researchers, During your various searches if you come across a reference to the surname JELLAMEY (sounds like with any spelling) I would appreciate hearing from you. Particularly 1841 census records. The name I am particularly interested in is LOUISA JELLAMY who married at Newland in 1844, when living at Lydbrook. Louisa was born about 1822 with a possible connection to the surname HATTON ANY occurrance of the two names in the same parish would be of great iinterest. (her mother may be Jellamy and her father Hatton). I have collected ALL references to JELLAMY in the IGI, including such possibilities as JELLYMAN or BELLAMY. Please do not use your valuable time by resending them. The surname appears to mainly congregate in a small area in the Forest of Dean, and I would be most interested in finding a trail to explain where the surname came from. Did it die out naturally or was it converted to another spelling as a result of pronounciation ?. As I live in Australia and am unable to attend a LDS library I am finding it difficult to get past this brick-wall, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Carole from Oz. <[email protected]>

    1. [FoD] ALDEN George born about 1846 Ruddle/Newnham
    2. John Davies
    3. Hi List I am trying to find the births of ALDEN George b about 1846 and his wife WELCH Rosena born about 1846. The 1881 census has them living in Newnham,Bullo,Gloucs They were married in 9.8.1866 in Soundley - Westbury on Severn and fathers names were recorded as ALDEN George labourer and WELCH Thomas labourer. This same census shows that ALDEN George was 34 yrs and born in Theale (either Berks or Somerset) and that WELCH Rosena 34 yrs was born GLS Broadoak Gloucs. the I.G.I. has a WELCH Rosanna being christened 7.3.1847 Westbury on Severn and shows parents as Thomas and Sarah and the 1851 census has a 4 yr old Rosaina WELCH as a scholar living with and EVANS Thomas in Westbury on Severn. But there is no definite connection although it is very likely to be the same woman. Any clues on either would be greatly appreciated. Rgds John

    3. Forwarded from List Owner From: Mel Bailey [mailto:[email protected]] Subject: Forest of Dean list Hi Folks, I have only recently joined this list, and am hoping that some kind person can offer some assistance. My great-grandfather was William Henry MEEK who, according to a copy of his birth certificate, was born on the 17th August 1854 at Stinders, East Dean. His parents were William MEEK and Martha Ann (nee WATKINS) who married in Gloucester in October 1853. I am interested in finding more details about Stinders at that time. What sort of place was it? Assuming that William sen'r was an employee at that site does anybody know the whereabouts of any staff records etc. that survive? William Henry was stated to be a collier at the time of his marriage at Durham in 1877. However at the time of the birth of his 11 children over the following 20 year period he was described as a bootmaker. His father-in-law Edward WATKINS was described as a boot maker / cordwainer on the 1841, 51, and 61 census returns for Ruardean, although he was described as a schoolmaster on his daughter's marriage certificate! Any information on the above named persons, or their relatives, will be gratefully received. Happy hunting in the Forest! Mel & Sue Bailey, Hertfordshire

    3. Hello listers Recently some messages to the list have queried the reasoning of the East and West Dean division. In order to enlighten the new members and others on the list, I am re-sending the following. 1841- The act for the relief of the poor is dated 9 July 1841 and authorises the introduction of the new Poor Law, dividing the Forest of Dean into the two townships of East and West Dean, by a line drawn in a diagonal direction from LYDBROOK (Wye) to Ayleford (Severn). The act attached East Dean to Westbury-on-Severn Union and West Dean to Monmouth Union. Harold Watkins Perth, Western Australia
