    3. Hi Listers I thought I would post my surname interest for the start of the New Year. I am researching George and Harriet MEREDITH from Littledean and Cinderford- whose son -Charles MEREDITH was born 1841 Charles was born a week after the 1841 census was taken. I have looked at the LDS film of this census but have not found his parents on it. Much of LittleDean was so faded that it appeared blank. Does any-one know if the original census pages are still readable? With best wishes Wendy in NSW OZ (the bushfires are just up the road and we are all praying for rain)

    1. [FoD] FROWEN, PUGH - Brockweir, Hewelsfield
    2. alan pugh
    3. Hi all Is there anyone here researching FROWEN from Brockweir? My GGGfather John Wesley FROWEN was born in Hewelsfield c. 1815 to a (H)ester FROWEN. She had a few children but baptised a lot of them at the same time (1822). I think she was the Esther Frowen bap. 15 April 1787 in English Bicknor. The children called themselves FROWEN and/or PUGH on various certificates/censuses. I found a will of a JOHN PUGH, a waterman of Hewelsfield who died in 1825 and left all his lands and house to Hester FROWEN as long as she remains unmarried and, if she did, it all goes to the children. I can find no trace of Hester after this will and I wondered if anyone here has already researched this part of the family or knows anything of what lands and house (in Brockweir, St Briavels & Hewelsfield) he left. There is no tithe map of that time (so they said) and it was not identified in the will. Any help would be greatly appreciated - been stuck for a year now. Happy new year Alan Pugh ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ alan pugh -- [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Hello List-A-Kins .. I have received an article extracted from a British newspaper, by snail mail, ....... I do not know the date that the article was published. As many of us have origins in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire I thought that you would enjoy reading it. ...beginning "A LOTTERY GRANT THATS TALK OF THE FOREST .... It is not a greeting many would recognise, but in the Forest of Dean 'Ow bist old butt?' is as common as 'hello' or good morning . Now the saying, which means 'how are you, mate' is to be preserved as part of a project, to save the ancient Gloucestershire dialect of Forest. The National Lottery has awarded £89,000 to the Dean Heritage Centre, near Cinderford, which will record expressions and sayings from local people, known as Foresters, to ensure their culture never dies. The dialect is spoken mostly by older people and is thought to have emerged in the 17th. or 18th. century. Its origins are in the area's former mining industry, but it never spread beyond the Forest, which is bound by the Rivers Wye and Severn. Words include "butty" - a good friend, "vurrenerf" - a foreigner, and "vurrist" - forest. And typical phrases are " Wona bi karevul wat ha bist soyin" - you want to watch what you're saying, and " Wi bin too long in the 'oods to be vritend ov owls" - were not frightened easily. With a population of 120,000, the forest of Dean is apart of rural Gloucestershire that developed its own way of life because of its geographical isolation. " end ...... Now, I have to say that there are many of my friends and rellies question me as " ta wat i be a sayin arf the time !! ..... now I have the perfect answer. " Its in the genes 'Ole boy !! Have a Happy New Year !! Glen A. Yearsley YEARSLEY Surname List Administrator

    3. As the subject of Lydney Tin Works has cropped up again could I please add my name to those interested in the history of the Tin Works - in particular anything to do with employee records. My family (ALLSOPP, PARRY and COOKE) were virtually all employed at the Works between mid 1800s and mid 1900s. I have even written to Lord Bledisloe who's family was part owner of the Works during the Richard Thomas era of the works but no records seem to be still around for that period. Bob Philpott

    3. Hello, If your Thomas Bowen is the one listed below, it suggests he probably worked at one of the Ironworks/Tin Works around the Lydney area at that time. Here is an extract of some hand written info' I have on loan, if it is of interest to you, I will scan all of the letter, (dated 1949) and send it to you. "The Lower Forge as it was first known, eventually became Lydney Tinworks, it originally consisted of two mills and a finishing department, the mills were driven by an old beam type steam engine. The Lydney Works grew, three new mills and a foundry were added to replace the one at Middle Forge, later followed new offices and four more mills a tinhouse and cold roll. The site continued to grow, two more mills were built and a new engine installed to replace the old beam engine, the mills know totalled eleven".
