I seem to recall recently that someone was asking if the Gloucestershire Monumental Inscriptions have been collected and copied. Well in the Victorian State Library I found the Bigland Gloucestershire Collection. More properly " The Ralph Bigland Historical, Monumental and Genealogical Collection Relative to the County of Gloucestershire." This is edited by Brian Frith and brought out by The Bristol and Gloucestershire Archeological Society. ISBN 0 900197 30 7 Ralph Bigland died in 1784 so everything here is pre that date. It is in 4 volumes and Indexed!! The parishes are arranged in alphabetical order so it is easy to use. Secondly since I have already found one marriage of a Hawkesbury couple in Sopworth I decided to try another Wiltshire Parish. Sherston Major looked close so I decided to try the Parish Records film at my local LDS centre. The film is No 1279304 and although there are some of the inevitable chicken scrawls the majority of the records are beautifully written and easy to read - especially the early records. I can't say I found "my" particular people but there were many of the surnames that I normally see in Hawkesbury and some of characters were from Oldbury and nearbye spots. There were definitely Chappells, Tompsons, Shipways and Wicks/Weeks among others. For any Hawkesbury searchers this is well worth a look, if only for the copperplate handwriting.
