    3. Hi Fellow Listers In response to the Pond Dippers request, I was Born and bred in Hawkesbury Upton in 1953 I attended the village primary school before going on to Katherine Lady Berkleys Grammar School down the road at Wotton-Under-Edge I realy could see the monument from my bedroom window and the view across the valley to Tresham I left Hawkesbury in my twenties and moved to Yate some 5 miles away I still have lots of family at Hawkesbury at the age of 10 my family bought a house in Back Street which was ineffect the private chapel and vestery to the Big house in the book "a monument to Hawkesbury" It had belonged to my uncle Maurice RANGER and his father before him they were the village carpenters and undertakers the chapel was the St Johns Street Methodist at one time but it was built at the same time as the big house in 1630 long before John Wesley and it is possible it was first used by Quakers we found a connecting tunnel to the big house next door why it was used is a mystery but this type of tunnel was not uncommon in the village, we were the first children to play on the back lawns we soon noticed regular areas begining to sag this is when we discovered there had been burials there and the land had be deconsacrated many years before the chapel had the upper half removed around 1959 and had been a carpenters workshop for many years my father was an apprentice there before national service. The chapel was converted to a house making it one with the vestry the entrance pillars are still there today along with its "sitting tennants" who the new owners say are still there. My family is interwoven with other families of the village my CHAPPELL side came from Oldbury-On-Hill originaly. The MILLARD side comes from Berkley the CORNOCK line is from Slymbridge, the STINCOMB side is connected to ILES other family are WATTS, PERKS, HARBER,BERRY, TOWNSEND, RANGER RODWAY TAVENDER, WHITE, GINGELL, HUTTON , COTES , HANDCOCK, PANTER my gran was Ella one of the CORNOCK triplets my great aunt was the PERKS who had 24 chilren twice and sadly lost 4 sons in the first war which is somthing I learnt from the Hawkesbury list. Many thanks to Geoff the Pond Dipper for making it possible to contact such a helpfull group of people with like interests. By the way the farm pool was used for dipping in quite recent times when at a football match the referee got on the wrong side of the crowd and in he went.
