Hello, I was in London yesterday,so checked the 1841 census;it shows Elijah(no middle name-is this significant?) as only child with Wm and Martha at H.Upton,so this doesn't help much at first sight. Also, the Genuki article on surnames suggests that Lathom/Lathan is not a common name in Glouc or Wilts,so this might add to the problem! Am not at all sure how to proceed with this, john s
I think the 1841 census indicates then that Elijah may have been the only surviving child (?) - William (who would have been 10) and Martha jr. (who would have been 4) aren't there. hmmm A quick scan of IGI LATHOM / LATHAMs found many in Lancashire but there were also some in Hawkesbury (I only scanned through alphabetically as far as Ann / Hannah). Hannah LATHAM married James BUCK here on 30 Sep 1767. A Hannah was christened by William and Mary LATHAM here on 18 Mar 1716. Another Hannah was christened 11 Mar 1741 here by John and Elizabeth LATHAM. Interestingly, an Abigail LATHAM married John NIBLET in Stroud in 1793 and NIBLET is a name from Sherston, Wilts. ! ... so the riddle continues! Thanks for checking the 1841 census for me John!
