Hi Dave & Robert, I thought I would check up on our Daniel ILES aged 49, born in South Cerney and living with his sister Dorothy born Castle Eaton, in the 1851 Hawkesbury Census. Dorothy must be the Dorothy Arkell ILES buried at Hawkesbury with her parents William and Elizabeth. This implies that Daniel's parents are also William and Elizabeth. In the 1881 Census of Hawkesbury is a Daniel ILES aged 79, born in Calmerdon and living at Saddlewood Farm. He also has a daughter Dorothy. According to the 1851 Census data Calmesden is part of North Cerney. This must be the same Daniel. Looking in the IGI there is a record for the baptism of Daniel ISLES on 19 Jan 1802 at North Cerney - parents William ISLES and Elizabeth. Furthermore there is another record for the baptism of Daniel ISLES on 19 Jan 1802 at South Cerney - parents William and Elizabeth. It looks as though these are identical records for the same person. Checking the IGI for other offspring of William and Elizabeth there appears to be Sarah bp 1800 at South Cerney and Giles bp 1803 at North Cerney. Sarah also has an identical record for North Cerney. A check of the 1851 Census and hey presto a Giles ILES aged 48 and born North Cerney, living just down the road at Rangeworthy. Is this the same Giles? Giles ILES aged 78 born Calmesden can be found in Cirencester in the 1881 Census. Is this the same Giles? Now Dorothy Arkell ILES was born around 1788 at Castle Eaton (WIL) according to the 1851 Census and her sister Mary (who is buried with her) was born around 1789. There is an awfully big gap of about 12 years between these birth dates and the probable birth dates of Sarah, Daniel and Giles. Have I got the right families? Is there another generation in between? Then there is William ILES aged 57 born Casle Eaton and living at Hillsley in 1851 - he has his niece Dorothy ARKELL living with him. Is he part of the family? Quite a coincidence of names and places if he isn't. It still appears to me that these ILES are incomers to the area. But why should they all move to the area? The plot thickens! Dennis
