Hi Ronda and all other WATTS researchers, I'm a new subscriber and this is my first ever message to a mailing list. Please forgive me if I break any of the rules on my first attempt (especially Geoffro). I am tracing the family of Thomas WATTS, believed to be the son of Daniel & Sarah, who was chr. 15 March 1820 at Hawkesbury. He therefore gets a mention in Ronda's suggested line of descent and, if its correct, my line goes back another 4 generations. In support of Ronda's suggestions I have little concrete to add except that Thomas named his second daughter Mary Jane (? chr 1846 Hawkesbury). Thomas married Emil(e)y WHITFIELD; in 1851 they are at Falfield (Thomas's occ. = Miller) with his mother in law Eliza WHITFIELD and children Sarah. R (abt 1843 Oldbury), Mary Jane( abt 1846 in Wotton under Edge),George (Whitfield) abt 1848 Woodford) and Albert Thomas (abt 1850 Falfield). Other children are Annie E. (abt 1856 Tortworth), Thomas (abt 1863 Falfield), William (abt ?1863 Cromhall) and Edward (abt 1865 Falfield). By 1881, George (my Gt Grandfather) has married Sarah GWINNELL, Albert has married Jane? and these two are in Cardiff. Annie has married John SPERRY (from Cheltenham). and Edward and Thomas are with them in Bedminster..Thomas snr is still with his mother in law (lucky man) at Woodford, (Berkeley) Alkington (occ Miller (C)), wilfe Emily and son William are also there. The 1881 census on CD ROM gives Thomas's place of birth as Tewkesbury but this should be Hawkesbury, although I have not seen the original census yet. Going back to Ronda's tree, did you know that Nathaniel WATTS married a second time after the death of Ann WATTS (nee DAVIS) in Dec qtr 1858 (age 62). Nathaniel married Ann(e) FRENCH (born Sept Qtr 1839 Slimbridge). They were married March Qtr 1860 Gloucester and she died in 1914 age 75. Their first child was Anne Mary Toghill WATTS. This information has been given to me by another reseracher and I have not verified it but have other details if anyone is interested. I also see that the IGI has Marie WATTES married to Richard WITCHELL 13 Jan 1635 Kingswood by Wooton under Edge - could she be another candidate for the Mary/Marie WITCHELL.ancestor? If anyone has any info. about my family or can fill in any gaps eg where were they in 1841, 1861, 1871 & 1891 and waht happened to the other offspring I would be delighted to hear from them. Very best wishes from Carole Sharp (in sunny Cardiff).
Very interesting Carole! I saw the other marriage to Nathaniel WATTS (Ann FRENCH) but couldn't be sure that it was the same Nathaniel ... that is good to know! My gt grandfather Thomas Fry WICKS, Mary Witchell WATTS' grandson went to Treorchy area of Glamorgan when he was 14 in 1893, apparently alone! Perhaps he stayed with second cousins (which is what George and Albert WATTS would have been)! I too saw the marriage of Marie WATTES to Richard WITCHELL but haven't made any attempt to follow that one up yet. I just finished getting "home copies" of the IGI for WATTS in both Wiltshire and Gloucestershire ... it's easier than sitting for hours searching the FamilySearch website and I can scan for single parent christenings in an attempt at assembling family groups. This ... because the FamilySearch site's search engine will not do a parent search without both first names and there is often only one. If any WATTS researchers find themselves in such a situation feel free to email me for a scan of the entire list... include all probable locations and the parent name, time frame, etc. (I also have WITCHELL for Wilts. and Glos. too!) Cheers! Ronda WICKS (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada)
