Hi Ted, Shirley & everyone else I have the LDS 1851 census index for Norfolk, and have re-learnt how to use it. I checked for the name STOKES, but is seems very rare in Norfolk, and there are no listing for anyone either born in or living at Shereford with a name anything like STOKES. I also checked under the spelling Sherford, and also for Sheffield, but also without success. To keep some Hawkesbury connection, I did find the following: Daniel WILLIS Head M 58 M Gardener Hawkesbury-GLS Elizabeth WILLIS Wife M 44 F Laundress Stroud-GLS Elizabeth WILLIS Daur U 17 F Dressmaker Wotton Under Edge-GLS Racheal WILLIS Daur U 16 F --- Wotton Under Edge-GLS Daniel WILLIS Son - 11 M Errand Boy Wotton Under Edge-GLS William WILLIS Son - 10 M Scholar Wotton Under Edge-GLS Thomas WILLIS Son - 9 M Scholar Wotton Under Edge-GLS George SMITH Vist U 42 M Cardwiner Stroud-GLS Address: 10 Sun Street, Birmingham Census Place: Birmingham Birmingham, Warwickshire PRO Reference: HO/107/2052 Folio: 685 Page: 5 FHL Film: 0087310 If you wonder what a cardwiner is, try saying cordwainer with a Brummie accent. This CD was done as a pilot for the 1881 census index, and covers Norfolk, Warwickshire and Devon. You actually connect! I am seeking help from out of the area. I have been in a list for Norfolk area for 2 years and have yet to get a message. I am sending this message here hoping someone in our group is researching the STOKES family (probably not) but might know of a person or group who is. > George Henry STOKES IV was born in Shereford in Norfolk in January, 1852 and came to Michigan, USA in the 1860s, a stonecutter by trade. The IV hints at a III. > Can you help? Thank you.
