Thanks, Geoff, for the reference to the Canadian poster with the ALWAY name. The incident was the Rebellion of Upper Canada which took place in December 1837, with the principal skirmish between the rebels and the militia taking place on 7th December. It lasted 20 minutes. The rebellion was an attempt to secure a reform of the narrow and tyrannical institutions in Canada at the time, and was eventually successful, although the rebellion itself was badly managed and many of the insurgents were captured. Some were executed. Some of my LAWRENCE family were caught up in the events, and as a result moved on to Ogle County, Illinois, where they founded Canada Settlement just north of Polo, together with other refugees from the rebellion. I have further information if any listers are interested. On the subject of illegitimacy and the WHITWORTH/HOPKINS query, I can quote an example from my own family, although in Sussex, not Gloucestershire. My gt-grandfather Frederick was born in 1836, the son of Emma SARGENT and William HOMARD. William HOMARD married Harriet BARDEN in 1838 and emigrated to New South Wales the same year. Emma SARGENT had a second illegitimate son in 1840 (the father was William BARDEN, brother of the aforementioned Harriet), but then disappears from view. The son Frederick, now having neither father nor mother, was brought up by his HOMARD grandparents. However, while on most official documents (census, marriage certificate, etc) he gave his name as Frederick SARGENT, from time to time the surname HOMARD was used, and this eventually became the norm. My grandfather put the two names together with a hyphen between. My feeling is that there was a much greater tolerance of illegitimacy than is generally thought. At a time when many brides were pregnant on their wedding day, and life expectancy short, it would seem that a bastard child was an accepted event in the early 19th century, and treated sympathetically. Perhaps it was later that morality took its revenge. Nothing to do with Hawkesbury there, but hope it helps someone.
