From: R.P. & A.L.Lawrence [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 01 January 2004 12:06 To: Maurice Catt Subject: [HWK] TOGHILL, CHAPPELL, ETC Joan Thanks for your message. I have a lot of information about the TOGHILL family, although as you will gather there are a number of mysteries, and they seem to have a habit of marrying their cousins, having illegitimate children, not registering births marriages and deaths, etc. Walter Toghill was the son of Mary Ann Toghill, nee Chappell. However, by the time of his birth in 1883, Mary Ann was a widow, her husband Hugh Watts Toghill having died in 1876. So one question is who Walter's father was. Have you seen his marriage certificate, which might give this information? Mary Ann has at least one son before her marriage: this was either Alfred or Daniel, or possibly both. I assume the father in this case was Hugh Watts Toghill. Her daughter Rosa was born in 1880, again some years after Hugh's death. Hugh Watts Toghill, from whom Walter got his name if not his genes, was the illegitimate son of Daniel Watts and Jane Toghill (nee Watts). Daniel and Jane were first cousins, and Jane was the widow of Thomas Toghill. She was living with Daniel when Hugh was born in 1841, and married him at the church of St Philip and St Jacob in Bristol on 4th March 1851. My own link with the Toghills is through Charles, a son of Thomas and Jane. Charles was the second husband of my gt-gt-grandmother Elizabeth Cooper nee Tavender. Toghill seems to be a local name, and there is a also a place called Toghill at the junction of the A46 Bath/Stroud and A420 Bristol/Chippenham roads. Many of the Toghills one finds in Hawkesbury are descendants of Stephen Toghill and Mary Britten, who lived at Marshfield. I also have an interest in the surname since I remember a Peter Toghill of Birmingham University who did a lot of work on the geology of Shropshire, where we lived in the 1970s. I have always wondered how he fitted into the family. My information on the Chappell family is limited. I cannot find the baptism of Emma Chappell in my database of Hawkesbury baptisms, and the Beavington transcription of the 1851 census shows her living at Oldbury but born Badminton. I note that John Chappell's wife's name is given as Caroline, but if she was 20 in 1851, she was too young to be the mother of the 7 year-old Emma. If you, or anyone else, can provide hard information about the Chappells, I would much appreciate it. I am sure it has been published on the list previously, but I did not take notes. In particular, who was the father of the brothers John and George Chappell, who lived together at Oldbury in 1851. I tried checking on the Morgensterns, but although I found them in the 1881 census, I cannot find them in 1901. Possibly a transcription error. Looking forward to hearing from you (and, incidentally, where do your Sargents come from?)
