Thomas WATTS married Emma SCRIVINES at Hawkesbury on 25th December 1861. This could be the Thomas who was the son of Hugh and Margaret nee HYDE, and who was living with them age 29 in 1861. Any other theories? This makes Thomas the brother of Sarah Ann WATTS who has all those babies and then married Doctor COX. I am now the disillusioned owner of a marriage cert for Walter John WATTS, who turns out not to be 'mine' after all, but probably still hails originally from Upton. The cert reads:- Marriage solemnised at The Congregational Chapel, Westgate, Peterborough in the County of Northampton,Twenty seventh April 1893, Walter John WATTS, age 27, bachelor, Blacksmith, residence at time of marriage Wickwar, Gloucestershire, father Thomas WATTS, Labourer, and Charlotte WRIGHT, age 26, Spinster, no profession, residence Eastgate, Peterborough, Father Robert WRIGHT, Builder, Witnesses Clara WRIGHT and R. WRIGHT. The ages of Walter and Charlotte tie in neatly with the 1901 census entry which first lead me to them.ie: RG13, Piece1460, Folio19, Page 2, Schedule 5 North Street, Stanground (which is just outside Peterborough ), Huntingdonshire Walter WATTS, head, M, age 35, Shoeing & General Smith, Employer, born Glos Hawresbury Ufetow ( My mac refuses to handle census images so I haven't been able to check that this is actually Hawkesbury Upton, but it seems very likely to me ) Charlotte WATTS, wife, M, age 34, born Northamptonshire Peterborough Percy N WATTS, Son, age 5, born Hunts Stanground John ROSE, servant, S, age 14, Apprentice to Shoeing Smith, worker, born Cambs Chatteris So who is this Walter WATTS ? I had become very attached to my theory that he was yet another blacksmithing Hawkesbury WATTS. I remember you saying that you had accounted for all the local Walter WATTS - but perhaps we can do a swap! My Walter ( born 1861 in Kilcott ) is still missing and I make you a gift of the spare one! Thank you Bob That certainly fits neatly. Most of my early WATTS data has come from the list's accumulated wisdom, and Carole's in particular, so I bow to any existing theories about Thomas's origins. Most of the area seems to be knee deep in WATTS and I find it hard to hold the relationships in my head. I've been listening in to the recent conversations with amusement. On balance I think a striking blacksmith would be more use than a missing one!
