Hi Liz & Carole I checked the 1891 census for two of the three Walter Watts listed on the 1891 Avon Census Index. Unfortunately, the Bristol Central Library no longer has the 1891 census for Bath, but the 1901 census has a Walter WATTS, age 33, born Bath, occupation Charwoman. The Walter who is the son of Thomas WATTS and Emma SCRIVINES is listed at Wickwar. He is age 26, a blacksmith, born Wickwar, lodging at the home of Michael Robinson, 25, General labourer. So how did he meet the girl in Peterborough? Internet dating, I suppose. The other Walter is living in Queen Square, Bristol, with the household as follows: John WATTS 62 Head Miller, employer born Chipping Sodbury Alice WATTS 47 Wife born Chipping Sodbury John W WATTS 26 Son Corn salesman born Tidenham, Glos Walter WATTS 24 Son Clerk, corn dealer born Chipping Sodbury Kate WATTS 15 Daughter Scholar born Stapleton and here they are in 1881. Hi Bob Thank you for going to so much trouble. As you say, negative results are still information and maybe will help someone else too. The Stapleton / Bristol WATTS do seem very grand - I suspect John WATTS didn't actually get his hands dirty in the mill. Would the move to Queens Square be upwards or downwards I wonder. With so many children, the family money wouldn't go very far once it was time to divvy up. Interesting that the wife came from Liverpool and one of the sons went to sea. What do you make of the Walter who is a charWOMAN in 1901? Misprint or oddity? Hi Bob, You have had a busy day! I have to say that I'm a little worried about the Walter WATTS in Bath who was a Charwoman! I know some of the WATTS got up to odd things but...... I know quite a bit about the family of John WATTS living at Queen Square, Bristol. He was the 2nd son of John WATTS & Mary Peachey WILLIAMS of Chipping Sodbury, Innkeeper at the Portcullis Hotel. They also lived at Melbourne House, Chipping Sodbury. If anyone knows why the house bears that name please tell me. There is a story that it is named after a WATTS who emigrated to Australia and discovered the WATTS river.. You have all heard me mention my cousin Kay Buchanan in Australia - he is a descendant of John WATTS' the elder's eldest son, Thomas, who was Uncle to this Walter WATTS. Thomas WATTS emigrated to Melbourne in 1853 and I would very much like to find some connection between this event and the house name. Following the death of John WATTS the Younger's wife Ellen (or Hellen) Maria WATTS nee WILLIAMS in 1882, John married the Governess, Alice MARSH . Nov 13 1883 at Clifton. Thanks for all this extra information. If only we could find Liz's Walter.
