Hi Carole and all A few weeks ago we were looking at some TOGHILL and WATTS marriages, and among these was the marriage of Elizabeth TOGHILL to Henry CROOM at Temple, Bristol 27th October 1834. I was checking the monumental inscription index today and found that buried with Stephen TOGHILL jnr (died 18th June 1833) at Christchurch, Downend were his brother John (died 22nd March 1837) and his widow Elizabeth CROOM (died 2nd June 1862, living St Augustine's Bristol). Elizabeth was born Elizabeth WATTS, bap 30 March 1795 at Hawkesbury, daughter of Hugh WATTS and Betty JACKSON. Stephen and Elizabeth's daughter, another Elizabeth, who was bap 8th May 1822 at Horsley and who married Henry STUMP at St Philip & St Jacob on 26th January 1846, is also buried at Christchurch, Downend. She was buried 29th June 1856, although the South Glos Burial Index has her name as STAMP. I checked this TOGHILL/STUMP marriage at the Bristol Record Office today, and this gives Elizabeth's father as Stephen TOGHILL, publican. This fits, as he was at the Horse Shoe Inn, Downend when he died. Henry STUMP's occupation is given as carpenter, and his father Thomas is also a carpenter. That seems to sort out some of these TOGHILLs and WATTSs. Of Hugh and Betty's children, Elizabeth married Stephen TOGHILL and Jane married Thomas TOGHILL. Stephen and Thomas TOGHILL were brothers. Hi Bob Thank you for sorting them out and confirming our thoughts. I didn't know about the STUMP family of carpenters. Hope they didn't get their name from some sort of woodworking accident! Cheers Caroel. ----- Original Message ----- From: "R.P. & A.L.Lawrence" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2004 1:53 PM Subject: [HWK] TOGHILL, WATTS and CROOM > Hi Carole and all > > A few weeks ago we were looking at some TOGHILL and WATTS marriages, and > among these was the marriage of Elizabeth TOGHILL to Henry CROOM at Temple, > Bristol 27th October 1834. > > I was checking the monumental inscription index today and found that buried > with Stephen TOGHILL jnr (died 18th June 1833) at Christchurch, Downend > were his brother John (died 22nd March 1837) and his widow Elizabeth CROOM > (died 2nd June 1862, living St Augustine's Bristol). > > Elizabeth was born Elizabeth WATTS, bap 30 March 1795 at Hawkesbury, > daughter of Hugh WATTS and Betty JACKSON. > > Stephen and Elizabeth's daughter, another Elizabeth, who was bap 8th May > 1822 at Horsley and who married Henry STUMP at St Philip & St Jacob on 26th > January 1846, is also buried at Christchurch, Downend.
