    3. Hi Carole I have looked at this one before I think Piety and George are twins of Elizabeth CHAPPELL the eldest daughter of John and Hannah and also baby Hannah born in 1841, Her mother Hannah only is mentioned on the register as parent perhaps John Collins WATTS is a clue the father being a COLLINS but they are saving face. regards Robert Visit my web pages at http://www.hawkesburyhistory.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "anthony sharp" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 21, 2004 8:56 PM Subject: [HWK] CHAPPELL > Hi All > A little teaser from my Australian cousin. 3. Hi Robert & All I've been having another think about this family and I'd like some second opinions please. The IGI has a PATY CHAPPELL dau of Eliza CHAPPELL bapt 26 Jan 1840. I suggest that this is Piety CHAPPELL who married George COLLETT. The IGI also has the baptisms of William CHAPPELL and George CHAPPELL sons of Hannah CHAPPELL on 14 July 1839. Seeking inspiration from the BMD certificates on the Hawkesbury web pages I found a marriage of Hannah CHAPPELL, daughter of William & William COATES at Hawkesbury on..... 14 July 1839! (Thank you Kath McIlwick) So I guess that Hannah CHAPPELL's children were baptised at the same time as she was married! Did the Vicar do cheap rates for this? On the 1851 census there is a William COATES & Hannah COATES with the family at Upton. No sign of George though. Does anyone know anything about this family please? 3. Hi Carole THe Hannah who married William COATES was born ca 1816 at Sherston . (1851 census) Her father was William CHAPPELL (marriage cert) Her christening can be found:- Christening Date: 16 Jun 1816 Recorded in: Sherston Magna, Wiltshire, England Father: William CHAPEL Mother: Hannah I have not investigated her further. I had not connected the two christenings with her though. This family is quite complicated and it loks like they were involved in a fair bit of deception. Hannah's son William appears on the 1851 census as William COATES. William was likely born at Hawkesbury. Free BMD gives Births Jun 1838 Coates William Chipping Sodbury 11 217 George appears on the 1861 census with mother and father at Back Street, now also called COATES, birth given as 1836, Chepstow. Looking to Chepstow you can find :- 1836 George Coates christened 23 Oct 1836, Trevethin, Monmouthshire, parents: William and Hannah COATES. It looks like they were living "as married" in Wales, but when they came back to Hawkesbury they needed to get married, the vicar made them (re)baptise the boys in the right name, but they continued to all call themselves COATES. Good Story?
