John Cooper and his wife Eleanor are buried in a grand tomb in Hawkesbury churchyard. John died on 20th November 1644, age 85, and his wife died 6th May 1645, aged 88. I have always wondered if John Cooper was connected in any way to my own Hawkesbury Cooper ancestors, so recently downloaded John Cooper's will from the PRO website. It is not easy to read, so I cannot yet do a full transcription, but I can understand enough to indicate that there is unlikely to be any connection to other Hawkesbury Coopers. Details are as follows: He appoints his wife Eleanor as executrix He bequeaths twenty shillings to be distributed to the poor people of Hawkesbury He leaves property in Marshfield and Dursley He leaves an annuity of forty shillings a year, out of the rent of his property at Dursley, to be paid to his kinsman Abraham (?) Hutchins He has a nephew John Cooper living in Kent The will was dictated to John Dun(?) of Hawkesbury John Dun of Hawkesbury and Robert Alsopp of Littleton are asked to help his wife as executrix, for which they will receive twenty shillings each. The will is in English, but the probate details are in Latin. Probate appears to have been granted on 13th May 1645, which would make it after Eleanor's death. I would be happy to send a copy of the will to anyone with a better eye for seventeenth century script, and a better knowledge of Latin.
