    3. Hello Adrian The 1851 Census Mary Ann WATTS is listed as Innkeeper of the "White House" public house in Wickwar (this is probably incorrectly transcribed as it was the "White Horse". She is a 41 year old Wife, born at Horton, Gls. and head of the House. Living with her are her children Edward (17) and Robert (12) who were both born in Wickwar. There is also a Visitor, 22 year old John WATTS, b. Wickwar - ? related to her husband? Was Mary Ann's husband (presumably Charles WATTS - see below) born in Wickwar. If so, were they married there? In the book " Wickwar Through the Ages" (Nov 1999) there are listings of Trades people from, I presume, various Directories:- Taverns & Public Houses 1841 - White House - Charles WATTS (presumably Mary Ann's husband) 1852/53 - White House - Mary Ann WATTS 1900 - Crown Public House, High Street - Sarah WATTS Again quoting from " Wickwar Through the Ages" - "Some of the building structure (The White Horse Inn") is believed to date back to the 16th century. There is a Priest's hole on the second floor. The Earl of Dulcie leased to Stephen BARBER the White Horse Inn and gardens; Stephen BARBER willed the premises to his daughter, Sarah ARNOLD. By 1838 Thomas ARNOLD, Sarah's husband, was the owner of the Inn and Charles WATTS was their tenant." Note Charles WATTS was a tenant so it is doubtful that Mary Ann was the proprietor. My CD of 1861 Census of Gloucetershire (ACDB - www.archivecdbooks.org) shows at White Horse Inn, Wickwar - William CORDY aged 59, Innkeeper and Farmer of 20 acres Mary A CORDY, wife, aged 54 Edward WATTS, step-son, aged 27, Dealer in Pigs [Mary Anne's son] plus two house servants. My CD of 1863 Post Office Directory of Gloucestershire (ACDB - www.archivecdbooks.org) lists William CORDY, White Horse, High Street, Wickwar. " Wickwar Through the Ages" shows that in 1871 William and Ann CORDY (is this Ann your Mary Ann?) were the occupiers of the White Horse and in 1881 it was Mary CORDY. 3. Hello Adrian & Brian I've been looking at this family too but can't add much to Brian's research. Pigot's Directory 1830 has Ann WATTS, White Horse, Wickwar. Could she have been Charles's Mother? IGI has Charles WATTS, son of Edward & Ann WATTS chr. 30 March 1800 at Wickwar. Gloucs Burial Index has the following burials at Wickwar. Edward WATTS 24 Dec 1824 age 69 Ann WATTS 25 Feb 1837 age 75. Charles WATTS 6 Jan 1848 age 45 - he looks likely for the husband of Mary Ann. Mary Ann WATTS's son Edward married Sarah NEALE on 21 March 1870 and John PARTINGTON may know more about this marriage, Best wishes Carole

    3. Many thanks to both Brian and Carole for the info on this Mary Ann WATTS. Here is what I can add to the family... William was born abt 1800 in Charfield to William and Hester CORDY. He married Susannah JOTCHAM in 1833 in Christ Church, Bristol. They had four children, Hester (b.1834), Joseph (b.1836), Isaac (b.1840) and Leonard (b.1842). Susannah died in 1844, and William then married Mary Ann WATTS in the December quarter of 1852. William died in 1874 and was buried at Wickwar. I do not know what happened to Mary after this date. William did leave a will, a transcript of which can be found on my web site ( http://www.sheppardfamily.net/fh/cordy/wills.htm#w6 ). His will mentions his wife Mary Ann, his step son Edward WATTS and his two sons Isaac and Leonard CORDY. George WATTS of Cromhall was a witness. -Adrian On Monday, July 21, 2003, at 11:42 PM, anthony sharp wrote: > Hello Adrian & Brian > I've been looking at this family too but can't add much to Brian's > research. > > Pigot's Directory 1830 has Ann WATTS, White Horse, Wickwar. 3. Thanks Adrian Interesting Will. I can see that I'll have to put some more effort into finding out about the Wickwar WATTS. I noticed another WATTS/CORDEY marriage at Cam 6 Nov 1801 (William & Sarah). Do you have this one? Cheers Carole

    3. Hi Carole, I do already have this marriage in my database, but I have no other information on the family. Do you happen to know anything more about them? All I know is that Sarah was baptised on 25 Mar 1778 in Cam, daughter of Charles CORDY and Sarah MILLARD. Here is the family on my web site http://www.sheppardfamily.net/fh/cordy/ccordy/d3.htm#i279 .
