Probably Thompson researchers have this one, but I found it in Saturday June 21st 1857 Bristol newspaper: 'Melancholy Suicide On Tuesday last William THOMPSON, a young man of Hillesley was found suspended by the neck from the branch of a tree in one of the fields of John COrnock Esq. He had been in a desponding state for some time past owing to family differences. The jury gave a verdict of Temporary Insanity.' That was all the detail it gave with no further info like his actual age or on what the 'differences' might have been. Thanks Cynthia I don't think we had met this before! My guess is that it's William Phelps Thompson, son of Lewis Frederick Thompson. Aged 18. He's on the 1851 census at Upton but not found thereafter. Another possibility is William Ashbee Thompson, son of Joseph Thompson. Aged 28. Born about 1829 and not found again, but he's not on the 1851 census so I favour the one above. Anyone else any thoughts? Doug Thompson
Hi Doug I have a transcribed copy of a letter written by John PITT from Hillesley dated September 30th 1856. In it he mentions "William Thompson's son Isaac. He hanged himself about 3 months ago and you recollect Tom Tandy, Old Tom Tandy's son. He hanged himself a month ago." Must have been hard times!
