Eric (and others) There is now no need to go to a library or record ofice to check the GRO indexes, since you can use them online at http://www.1837online.com/ These are scanned images of the register pages 1837 to date. It costs just under 10p per image, but that can work out a lot quicker and cheaper than travelling and parking, and I found it easy to use. You can also enlarge, save and print out pages as you wish. If anyone finds an image of a hand-written page on 1837online, please let me know, as I am writing a brief review for our FHS Journal. All the pages I have found so far have been typed or printed, and I would like to try a hand-written one as well. There is also the option of FreeBMD for the 1837-1902 indexes, which are quicker to use and free, but not yet complete. They are at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/. Cheers Brian There is no record of any CROKERS or CROCKERS at Horton. So this must be the Edith I am looking for. I can not believe the chances of two Edith CROCKER born 1830 at Horton with a Bristol connection via a marriage that would likely take her away from Horton to Bristol. It just has to be her surely? I do agree though that her first husband Isaac CROKER is a mystery. I will have to check the GRO for an Isaac CROCKER or CROKER death in the region between 1848 and Mar qtr 1851 as you suggest. If anyone on the list is due to check the GRO in the next couple of days could they check for me since I am not going to my nearest GRO at Newport Library for a few weeks due to work commitments. It shouldn't take more than 10 mins. This is the census entry which shows her as a servant CROCKER aged 21 b Horton. Unfortunately GB's Cds don't included marital status or family relationships. Was there an Edith CROCKER at Horton in 1830? I'm also showing the two Isaac CROCKERS. It may well be that she is married to one, most likely the 25yo. I suggest the answer must lie in the marriage cert and if not one of these two then the unknown Isaac may be assumed to be dead, and will probably be found in the GRO index between 1848 and Mar Qtr 1851. If she is married to one of these two then there should be children after 1851. You may need to look at the microfilm/fiche. I have found several examples of such an age gap in older rural communities but so far not in cities. If the age is just wrong then it can't be this chap. Again, the marriage cert will clear this up). It's not far from here to Bedminster, so it is quite possible she is married to either of these and living in at her work when she's working). ==== ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY Mailing List ==== When replying to messages please make sure to remove ALL the "Re: and Hawks" bits in the subject line as otherwise these will be repeated. Browsing the 1861 census I came across Lewis WYATT a 31 year old soldier, born Hawkesbury, in the Charing Cross Hospital. Hope this is of interest to someone. Shirley
