I have just joined the list and would like to say hello to everybody. I have recently put a similar enquiry to the Gloucester list, but a very kind lister there suggested that, since the couple I am seeking were both from Hawkesbury, I should join this list and ask the very knowledgeable people here. I have a marriage in 1777 of JOHN WITCHELL and LUCY RUMMIN on 9th February, 1777. They were both from Hawkesbury, but the marriage took place at Oldbury on the Hill. They had the following children: WILLIAM, baptised 28th September, 1777 in Didmartin, Gloucestershire. JOHN, baptised 7th February, 1779 in Didmartin, Gloucestershire. ISAAC, baptised 6th June, 1780 in Didmartin, Gloucestershire. There is then a gap of 10 years before I can find the birth of the next child: JESSE, baptised 19th September, 1791, and this one is in Sopworth, Wiltshire. This is not simply a late baptism, since the 1851 census gives JESSE's age as consistent with a birth in 1791. I have checked the on-line IGI for Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire but have not been able to find any record of any other children. I realise that the IGI is only a *finding tool* and I appreciate that the absence of information does not mean there were not children (possibly stillborn or not registered), but can anybody suggest where would be the next place to look, or could there have been any other reason for a gap of 10 years between the children (His/Her Majesty's Pleasure, perhaps <bg>). I do not know what the father's occupation was. I also understand that Hawkesbury, Oldbury on the Hill and Sopworth are not that far apart, so it seems to suggest that the couple did not move very far. I would be delighted to hear from anybody who might have come across these in their research. Best wishes and kind regards to all, Helen, West Sussex, UK
Hi everyone, I may be on the WITCHELL trail too! John SHORTMAN m. Lucy MICHEL, Pip and Jay, Bristol 24 Mar 1793. Lucy, 85 on the 1851, lists her birthplace as Westerleigh. No trace of her baptism even in surrounding parishes. While looking for something else in the Pip and Jay registers I came across a baptism of John Whitchell s. of John and Lucy SHORTMAN 29 July 1794. It is not easy to read but it is there. Back this week to Westerleigh registers, Lucia d. of Jonas WITCHOL baptised 31 March 1766. As John and Lucy both made their marks when they married perhaps neither could tell if Lucy's name was correct. Has anyone heard of a Jonas WITCHOL? Regards, Maureen. -----Original Message----- From: Helen Carlisle [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, October 26, 2003 8:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [HWK] New Lister researching WITCHELL I have just joined the list and would like to say hello to everybody. I am in touch with someone who descends from the Jonas and Mary who had children at Pucklechurch/Westerleigh. There was also a Jonas and Mary at Hawkesbury at similar time. My friend has not traced the parentage of Jonas at Westerleigh. Jonas b. approx 1722 bur Feb 1807 St James, 84 yrs of age. 1768 Jonas listed as husbandman. Jonas married a Mary Chambers 20 Feb 1744 in Pucklechurch. They had a child Lucy b. 31 Mar 1765 at St James Westerleigh. She does not have this marriage below I am sure so will forward your email if you like? Do you have other connections? I am hoping to link the various branches to our own at Hawkesbury and Charfield.
