Hi All Please may I introduce myself to your mailing list My name is Sylvia Rowe I live in Australia {born in Wales} and I am the great granddaughter of John Winbow who was born circa 1834 at Hawkesbury I would be pleased to receive any information on John Winbow ,he was married to Hanna Jane ?who was born in Iron Acton also in 1834 They had two children Laura Mary born Hawkesbury 1864 and Florence {my grandmother} who was born at Didmarton in 1871 John was still alive in 1890 living at Sharpness his occupation was that off a carpenter Thanking you all Sylvia Rowe
Sylvia There were two John Winbows born Hawkesbury in the 1830s. One was baptised 10 January 1836, the son of John and Sarah nee Tavender. The other John was baptised 9 February 1834, the son of William and Mary. John (Bap 1834) is in the 1851 census as an apprentice carpenter, so would seem to be the most likely candidate. John (bap 1836) is living with his family next door to his grandmother Hester Tavender in the 1851 census. His mother's sister Ann is living next door on the other side with her husband Isaac Chappel. No occupation is shown for John. The "other" John Tavender is recorded in the 1881 census living in Back Street, Hawkesbury, age 45 unmarried, a farm labourer, living with George Witchell. Here are the entries from the Gordon Beavington transcription of the 1851 census: 37 WINBORO William 52 mason Hawkesbury Mary 50 Innkeeper Yate William Neal Winboro 22 Mason Hawkesbury Robert 20 Hawkesbury John 17 Carpenter App Hawkesbury John Brother 55 Parish Clerk Hawkesbury 26 TAVENDER Hester Widow 70 Lodging House keeper Hawkesbury EDWARDS Samuel Lodger Widr 67 Ag Lab Hawkesbury HARDING Thomas Lodger 30 Ag Lab Hawkesbury NIBBLETT James Widr 10 Ag Lab Hawkesbury COLE Richard 58 Hawkesbury Rebecca 11 Scholar Hawkesbury Richard 10 Hawkesbury 27 WINBORO John 42 Ag Lab Hawkesbury Sarah 41 Hawkesbury John 15 Hawkesbury Emily 9 Scholar Hawkesbury Henry 7 Scholar Hawkesbury Elizabeth 13 Scholar Hawkesbury Ann 2 Hawkesbury 28 CHAPPELL Isaac 31 Ag Lab Hawkesbury Ann 28 Hawkesbury George 7m Hawkesbury The surest way to sort this out is to get the marriage certificate for John and Hanna and see who John's father is. I cannot find the marriage in FreeBMD, but it should be traceable through 1837online. The occupation and age at the census would suggest that your John was the son of William and Mary. I am descended from the Hester Tavender listed above, but can send you further details of both Winbow families. Hi Sylvia, Pleased to meet you. I have some information on another branch of the WINBOW family which may help. Robert WINBOW married Anna (Hannah) Jane WATTS 22 April 1854 at St Michaels, in Bristol. Robert was born in Hawkesbury about 1829 and died on 16 Jan 1877. He is buried at Hawkesbury. I don't know who his parents were though. Anna was the daughter of John WATTS (butcher) and Jane PRITCHARD. There are 2 Hannah/Anna WINBOWs on the 1881 census, this one at High St Hawkesbury, and your gt grandmother who is at Newtown, Berkeley. I have a copy of a memoriam card which is probably for your gt grandmother and not Hannah Jane WINBOW (WATTS). It reads "In Loving memory of Hannah WINBOW of Sharpness Who died the 12th of December 1898 Aged 65 years. Interred in Berkeley Cemetery Dec 15th." Can you confirm that this is your family please? Hi Sylvia It looks as if your John WINBOW was the carpenters appentice son of William WINBOW and Mary surname NEAL (I think ) but was born in Beaminster Dorset in 1797 from the 1871 census but born Yate in the 1851 census, she died at Hillesley in 1883 buried at Hawkesbury, your John must be their son as the other John was unmarried and a farm labourer. William Winbow above was the son of William WINBOW who lived at Hawkesbury Upton I think born in 1761 and died 1826 and was at first in 1798 leasing the left side of what is now the Beaufort Inn and later purchased it, he had at least 3 sons Thomas b,1790, John b, 1794 the later village clerk who died 1864 aged 70 and your William b,1796/7 died Hawkesbury 1854. William snr was a tailor by trade as was most of his immediate family, William jnr was a Mason but his wife came from a family of publicans hence they started the Beaufort Inn where we hold our meetings and is pictured on my web pages. The WIMBOW name has been in Hawkesbury from at least 1376 these are SOME of the variations 1376 WYNEBAND 1422 WYMBALD 1550 WYNBOLL 1627 WYNBOLD 1634 WINBOLD 1644 WIMBOLLE 1754 WIMBLE 1777 WEMBOLE 1791 WINBOW. regards Robert visit my web pages at www.btinternet.com/~ra.millard ----- Original Message ----- From: "wrowe athotkey.net.au" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 4:00 AM Subject: [HWK] new member > Hi All > Please may I introduce myself to your mailing list > My name is Sylvia Rowe I live in Australia {born in Wales} and I am the great granddaughter of John Winbow who was born circa 1834 at Hawkesbury > I would be pleased to receive any information on John Winbow ,he was married to Hanna Jane ?who was born in Iron Acton also in 1834 > They had two children Laura Mary born Hawkesbury 1864 and Florence {my grandmother} who was born at Didmarton in 1871 > John was still alive in 1890 living at Sharpness his occupation was that off a carpenter > Thanking you all > Sylvia Rowe > > > ==== ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY Mailing List ==== > Please remember when you post messages that SURNAMES should be in CAPITALS. > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
