    1. [[Hawks]] INNS AND PUBS
    2. Some info about inns and pubs in Hawkesbury and H. Upton c1830-1850 passed on to me by my relative B.A. Whitworth of Guernsey, who got this from correspondence with the Duke of Beaufort's Badminton Estate. The inns are the traditional taverns we are familiar with, but "beerhouses" were very rough "low rent" private houses which sold only beer, follwowing the 1830 Beer Act when any householder could do so. The Dunkirk Inn and Petty France Inn were both owned by the Duke. The Fox Inn and the Beaufort Arms were privately owned, and still operate today (Mark Steeds is the very helpful proprietor of the Beaufort, which was once named the "Duke of Beaufort"). The "New Inn" was a private house which became an inn in 1844 (possibly by 1836) and was once again a private house by 1853. From this, it sounds awfully like a beerhouse. The Barley Mow was a beerhouse, and is now a private house. My ancestor George WOOLNOUGH and his brother Robert were shown as "innkeepers" on their children's 1837 baptismal records. I suspect they were at the New Inn c1837-1840, because the years match up and George shows up keeping an "inn" of that name at Sherston a few years later. Also, we've pretty much eliminated all the others. Geoffro, would you mind dropping a copy of this to Mark Steeds next time you need an excuse to stop in there? <he says with a straight face> Cheers to Mark! Best wishes, Ken Murray in New York
