Hi Geoffro Thanks for your email re the CARTERS. Yes, some of those listed on your surname list are indeed related to me. My line starts with ANN CARTER date of birth and parents unknown. She appears to have had 14 children and each time, according to the parish register it states reputed father THOMAS HUNT. My research for some years lead me to conclude that I was a direct descendant of their first born JAMES CARTER (1777) who married ELIZABETH THOMPSON 6.2.1803. Certain pieces of information that have come to light in the last year have made me change my theory. ANN CARTER and THOMAS HUNT had a daughter MARY CARTER bap. 10.8.1788 therefore making her by 1807 approx. 19 years old. In Gloucester Record Office I found some information relating to a MARY CARTER of the same age from the village of Hawkesbury who had a male bastard child on 24.1.1807 by THOMAS SIMS of Stroud who's occupation is recorded as Butcher. No baptism recorded in the I.G.I. THOMAS CARTER married MARTHA WINBOW on the 14.12.1828 at Hawkesbury. They went on to have 8 children some of which appear on your CARTER list. The children are as follows: SARAH CARTER bap. 1.8.1830 married WORTHY HOPKINS 2.6.1852 at Clifton Register Office Bristol. GEORGE CARTER bap. 14.10.1832 JOHN CARTER my 2 X G. Grandfather born 18.12.1834 - information from family bible - bap. 22.2.1835 - married MARY ANN WOODHAM 14.3.1868 Marshfield. JANE CARTER bap. 5.3.1837 married HENRY STNCHCOMBE at Wickwar on 4.11.1865 ENOCH CARTER bap.29.9.1839 - burial 21.6.1857. HANNAH CARTER bap. 18.4.1844 GILES CARTER bap. 6.6.1847 - married DRUCILLA HOWELL 27.10.1866 - died 18.12.1826 - information re date of death metal cross in Hawkesbury Churchyard. ELIZA MARY CARTER bap. 6.6.1847 - burial 22.1.1852 MARTHA CARTER nee WINBOW died 22.2.1848 from 'disease of the spine'. In 1855 THOMAS CARTER remarried and took as his new wife ELIZA PRICE who like him had been widowed. THOMAS CARTER is recorded on the marriage certificate (no. 202) as being 47 years of age and his father as THOMAS SIMS butcher. The witnesses to this marriage were WORTHY and SARAH HOPKINS his daughter and son in-law. I therefore conclude that this THOMAS CARTER was not the one born to JAMES CARTER and ELIZABETH THOMPSON. What do you think? Janet
