re WINBOW, WOOLNOUGH and PUBS: I am in shock, I just dug out my notes and found a connection between John WINBOW and the Hawkesbury Pubs! It seems that John WINBOW was innkeeper at the Beaufort Arms circa 1837-1845, according to a letter that I received from Mark Steeds in late 1998 (sorry I can't be more precise, disk crashes will do that!). In 1842 George WOOLNOUGH was innkeeper at Sherston at "the New Inn" which belonged to Thomas WINDOW(WINBOW?) 1842 Tithe Map Tenant of land at Sherston owned by Thomas Window Thomas Window 141 Yds and Bldgs Owner 142 Malthouse, garden, orchard George Woolnough 143 The New Inn Occupier 144 Little Down (Pasture) Payable to vicar 5/3 1851 Census for Sherston Magna Victualler Pubs named "The New Inn" appear in both Hawkesbury and Sherston... perhaps both owned by WINBOWs? And tenanted by WOOLNOUGHs? This is getting VERY interesting!!! Cheers from New York, Ken Murray
