Carole Please thank Cousin Kay for the further information. I think we have to accept that Hawkesbury is a philosphical concept, rather than a geographical place. He died Intestate and his ¦sister Ann DOUGLAS (nee TOGHILL later BULLICH) declared that she was ¦his only surviving next of kin in Victoria. ¦ ¦Ann DOUGLAS's daughter Annie made her affidavit to the effect that she ¦had worked for her Uncle for 9 years and that he had never paid her any ¦wages "because for many years he had been much embarrassed in his ¦business". Moses had given Annie the furniture from the Hotel "as a ¦slight recognition of my services - the whole of which would not be of ¦the value of £100 at the utmost and gave to my mother (his sister) an ¦old horse and buggy the value of which is about £15". Annie Douglas says ¦that her sister Alice also worked for Moses TOGHILL without payment. ¦When Ann DOUGLAS drew up the list of Assets and Liabilities she ensured ¦that her daughters were included as Liabilities and received backdated ¦wages for 4 years! ¦ ¦The Inventory of Moses TOGHILL's possessions includes the stock of ¦alcohol at the Railway Hotel. It would be interesting to know how it ¦compares to that of the Beaufort at a similar time. I don't imagine that ¦the Beaufort stocked 2 dozen cases of Fosters Ale! ¦ ¦I also have a copy of the Will of Isaac TOGHILL (son of Thomas TOGHILL & ¦Jane WATTS) who died 26 August 1891 at Chiltern Victoria, Licensed ¦Victualler and Hotel keeper. ¦ ¦Isaac leaves everything to Alice MELLOR, nee Douglas (one of the unpaid ¦daughters of Ann DOUGLAS nee TOGHILL). He also forgives his sister Jane ¦the debt of £250 which he had lent her. ¦ ¦Needless to say, all of these docuknats came to me courtesy of Cousin ¦Kay who has also supplied background information on the families. If ¦anyone would like more information please let me know. ¦ ¦Cheers ¦Carole ¦ ¦PS I know that Australia does not quite fit within the boundaries of the ¦Greater Hawkesbury area but I hope you will indulge me on this one! ¦ ¦ ¦-----Original Message----- ¦From: R.P. & A.L.Lawrence [mailto:lawrence@hazels.u-net.com] ¦Sent: 23 April 2005 23:31 ¦To: ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com ¦Subject: [HWK] Jane CHAPPELL formerly WATTS nee TOGHILL ¦ ¦Hi Carole ¦ ¦Thanks for that information about Jane TOGHILL (1834-1892).
