I was at Kew this week,so took a look at the Star Chamber suit found on-line by Pat A,ref STAC3/1/30 This is just a single sheet record of the plaintiff's bill with no answer by defendants or interrogation of witnesses,so imfo rather limited---but press on regardless. Suit is titled on back Heuse v Butler, and seems to be a public disorder case. No firm date given but think it has to be 1548-50 as:- - only date in text is 1537(and that a bit uncertain) when it says churchwardens were Nicholas Prowte and John Longden -- says manor passed to def J Butler at dissolution of monastery, and we know there is a deed for this,1548 -- we know the 2nd plaintiff,Nicholas Martin was owner of sub-manor at Chalkley at time and he d1551 with a will and i.p.m. I dont have any dates for 2nd ptf,Wm Heuse or the other defs named as J Hobbes,Alderley, lab;Thos Byshop,Gt Badm, mason;J Bruges,Hawkesbury, lab;Wm H-----,Wyk,Wilts;Wm Compere,Hawkesbury,------; Wm Forde,do,lab;J Buck,Alderly, mason; all referred to late in doc as 'other riotous persons above named'. The preamble describes the parish as being in possession of Abbot of Pershore and having value of £170pa ---something about 'bringing dead bodies to church',line 12, and repeated mention of the church house, and 'the dwelling house for poor men of parish' on line 26 Some of the names are in 1535 muster roll for Glouc ( E101/58/24 at Kew and copy,D837 at Glouc) eg Nicholas Martin heads list for Hawkesbury, charged with harness for archers and a horse, with Nicholas Prowte on same list as an able archer. In Kilcott, where Thos Crewe heads list we have J Longden, elder and son All grist to the mill, and looks as though new lord of manor was flexing his muscles with help of some henchmen, john s
I have just rejoined the List, and have to pass on to John Stinchcombe some info re: the marriage by Licence of Thomas Wright and Ann Tylton. A very kind lady checked the Marriage Licence Allegations for 1684, and found that it was a Thomas Winkle, not Wright that married Ann Tylton. I got the original data from microfilm of the PR's of Dyrham, Glos. I am now seeking any possible details of the Marriage of Thomas Wright to someone with the Christian name of Grifsel, as that is how it is spelled in his Last Will and Testament. From 1694 on Thomas Wright was living at Westerleigh, Glos, as the first page of the PR's for the Parish has the baptism of his son Thomas, Robert my 5 x Gt Grandfather was baptised in 1696. He died in March 1729, and Grifsel died years later. Any help on this will greatly appreciated, as I cannot get out to my local LDS centre as well as I used to. Stuart Grifsel is probably actually Grissel because of the 'f' looking character used when a double 's' was written. This was also spelt alternatively as Grizel or Griselda, which was a common Scottish name at one time.
