While going through the baptism records of Hawkesbury today I came across the baptism of Daniel, baseborn son of Elizabeth THOMPSON in July 1802. This event does not seem to be on our records. I quickly connected this with the marriage in Feb 1803 of Elizabeth THOMPSON and James CARTER. It seemed likely this was the same Elizabeth (and probably the birth prompted the marriage!). We have never been sure who this Elizabeth was. Geoffro suggested she was Betty, daughter of Giles THOMPSON and Betty MOUSSEL (baptised Horton 1775). I remained unconvinced. I moved on to check the 1851 census and there was a Daniel CARTER aged 48 - just right! A new THOMPSON relative I thought! Then I found James CARTER and Betty on the census. James OK - AGE 75 Born Hawkesbury. But - Age of Betty - 70. Place of birth - Stroud! A quick IGI search finds Elizabeth THOMPSON baptised Stroud in Feb 1779. - Right age, right place! That means she and Daniel are not ours at all! (Not until the family gets quite a bit wider yet.) But at least I'm sure of both those register entries now. Doug Thompson
