Hello Susie, Your query is the one we've all been waiting for! If John J was related to the Prime Minister and held a gov app, there is a very good chance we can find him. Start with the National Registry of Archives,Chancery Lane,London:- web-site= www.hmc.gov.uk and e-m nra@hmc.gov.uk he could well be in their Personal Index, but send them imfo you have posted here; list the responce if you like and we can play it from there. There is a huge Jenkinson archive at Br Lib,and it is reasonably well indexed-leave that with me-it may take a while john s ps not sure what to do about the horses
John Thanks for the government site to try. I knew there had to be some type of government records. As I am located in the middle of Kansas USA, it will be difficult to get to the Br Lib at present so I appreciate any help you can give me. Below is more info that I have. Some is documented and some is family hand-me-down history. 1. I do not have an exact birthdate for John. One source says 1793, but the 1860 US census age would come out 1805. Nor do I know where he was born. Census states England as does family lore. I do not know parents name--but as a child always heard about John being a family name passed down(assumed his dad was also a John). I do not know any siblings names for sure. One granddaughter thought maybe he had a sister Mathilda(no documentation). I also know that "a relative" named William JENKINSON(b 1860, d.1913) witnessed his son's(John James) marriage certificate in Illinois. William's father was also named William(b1810 d.1879) How they connected I don't know. 2. John JENKINSON was in Ireland. When he arrived I don't know. He immigrated to USA in 1850. He had something to do with tax collections. The story is that the plight of the Irish(Famine) got to him. At first he used personal funds to try to help, but to no avail.(Family story used to teach us young ones about sharing and giving) 3. While in Ireland, he married Ellen SHORT(b. 1808 Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland) The birth place and date of Ellen is correct and documented by this little Irish lady herself who lived to be 105 and had lots of interviews--so I have quite of few direct quotes from newspapers. Marriage date unknown. 4. Both Ellen and John belonged to the Church of England and raised their family in the church. 5. Their son Thomas(oldest child--I think) was born in 1836 or 1837(conflicting sources) in Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland. (US census confirm Ireland and his obit says Queenstown--date given here is 12 Oct. 1837) 6. Other children were Jane, Elizabeth, Ellen, Mary--all born in Ireland. (Family lore said that Jane died during the crossing to America) 7. In Aug 1847--twin girls(Amelia and Susan) were born in Dublin. His son John James(my grandfather) was born in 1852 in Brooklyn, NY, USA. Thanks in advance for any light that you can shed.
