    1. [HWK] Hawkesbury Marriages Aaaaggggghhh!!!
    2. Hello all, First may I say what an excellent job Lisa has done transcribing these marriages. Well done Lisa. As a result I now have 3 problems, or rather unidentified persons. Is there anyone with easy access to the Hawkesbury registers who could look up 3 entries for me to see if there is any additional information given, e.g. widower, otp of xyz, etc. I am totally in the dark re: Jouen EDWAL & Thomas DREUER m. 13.4.1640 Sarah EDWALS & Thomas DAVIS m. 7.5.1647 also Richard EDWEL & An HORWOOD m. 27.12.1640 I suspect all three of being children of Richard Eddolls of Didmarton who died in 1650. Richard was the son of Thomas IDOLLS & Agnis HEAVEN. Any offers or additional information gratefully received. Regards Sue Sissons

    3. Hi Janet and attention of Ronda , I hope that Robert does not mind as again not strictly Hawkesbury but connects with Tresham ......difficult as these people kept moving in and out of villages and the estates/names seem to connect to the area surrounding. By Wm. & Elizabeth Fortune presume you mean??? William 1671-1745 & Elizabeth Heskins (aged 23 in 1693) I have children: The Rev. John Fortune ( m. Anne Witchell d/o Jonathan) William 1705-1756......have not looked at him. Mary 1692-1769 m. John Phillimore of Cam. Did not take any furthur as Witchell main focus. Have no mention of a Lydia...what were the dates/ marriage etc.? Could this ......Lambe you mention below be Winchcombe. There was a Henry Winchcombe who was buried in the same grave as Jonathan Witchell( Bigland). If so have a friend who has a lot on the Winchcombe name. Henry Winchcombe m. Sarah Austin 1725/6 was mayor of WUE in 1732/ 52 and held an extensive building in Bear St. Again have not looked in ages but Winchcombes were clothiers and there was a connection with the Cliffords of Frampton on Severn....I think...... The Witchells connect with the Hopkins....John Witchell Hicks Hopkins....... but have not come across Heskins before. The Hopkins farmed in same area of WUE, Charfield and Kingswood. Have extracts from Lyndley: Mayors of WUE 1649 Nicholas Heskins Clothier 1664 """"""""""""""""""""""""" 1676 """"""""" NB Christopher Jordan also mayor 1677/92 the name Jordan appearing in Fortune tree Regarding Moore Fortune of Astnam could this be Angeston? Angeston Grange, Uley. I have The Country Houses of Glos. 1660-1830 if anyone wants a lookup. Angeston Grange was built for the Lloyds in 1780s. N. Nibley From what I can gather there were interconnections between the Austins, Holbrows, Longs, Witchells, Hicks, Heskins, Jordans and Winchcombes who were all trying to keep the 'clothier' lines together. Anthony Holbrow the will 1768 on Roberts site......had Burden Court, Tresham.( His sister was Mary Holbrow m.1727 John W. of N. Nibley)...our William W. yeoman(featured in the will) was tenant of Burden Court, very complicated. Will phone someone who might know about Lydia. Would be interested in your Heskins ....did they hold lands? Do you think the Hopkins in area were Heskins? 2. Hi Patsy, Thank you for your message. I am off for the weekend so can't give it the attention it deserves but I will answer a few questions. Elizabeth HESKINS did marry William FORTUNE. Someone has ascribed William with a different wife but I am sure that Elizabeth is correct... There were both HESKINS and HOPKINS in the area and I think that as HOPKINS is a more common name the transcriber didn't look properly but it was changed later. There are some references to HESKINS in connection with land ownership in the Berkeley manuscripts and other documents. An early seating plan of North Nibley church shows seats allocated to I think two HESKINS family heads. The references to NIcholas HESKINS as mayor of Wotton-under-Edge refers to two men, grandfather and grandson. I would very much like to know more about Lydia LAMBE.... Thanks for your efforts on my behalf. Cheers, Janet

    1. More TOGHILL Victuallers!
    2. Robert Millard
    3. Hi Carole and Bob These TOGHILLS really did have it in their blood, I only wish my old granny CHAPPELL could have seen this, she could never work out why her husband Ernest was always in the Pub! however she did know it was in his blood, well at least until 9 the next morning. I was thinking as Oz won't fit the Greater Hawkesbury we could twin it with Inglestone common, as there's not a lot in the middle of that either. Joking aside did they do any brewing at all, I think the licence records for Glos are at GRO in with the Petty Sessions I wonder what they might hold, my CORNOCKs were publicans as well. regards Robert Visit my web pages at http://www.hawkesburyhistory.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "ANTHONY SHARP" <sharpafc@btinternet.com> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2005 9:40 PM Subject: [HWK] More TOGHILL Victuallers! > Hi Bob and anyone else with TOGHILL interests. > > Bob has set out a list of TOGHILL connections with the licensed trade. > I'd like to add some more! > > Moses TOGHILL, the son of Stephen TOGHILL & Elizabeth WATTS of Downend, > GLS and 1st cousin of Jane. > > Moses TOGHILL died 15th August 1885 at the Railway Hotel, Inglewood, > Victoria where he was a licenced Victualler. 3. Hi Carole This is all facinating stuff; keep it coming and thanks to Kay regards Barry -----Original Message----- From: ANTHONY SHARP [mailto:sharpafc@btinternet.com] Sent: 27 April 2005 22:41 To: ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HWK] More TOGHILL Victuallers! Hi Bob and anyone else with TOGHILL interests. Bob has set out a list of TOGHILL connections with the licensed trade. I'd like to add some more! Moses TOGHILL, the son of Stephen TOGHILL & Elizabeth WATTS of Downend, GLS and 1st cousin of Jane. Moses TOGHILL died 15th August 1885 at the Railway Hotel, Inglewood, Victoria where he was a licenced Victualler. He died Intestate and his sister Ann DOUGLAS (nee TOGHILL later BULLICH) declared that she was his only surviving next of kin in Victoria. Ann DOUGLAS's daughter Annie made her affidavit to the effect that she had worked for her Uncle for 9 years and that he had never paid her any wages "because for many years he had been much embarrassed in his business". Moses had given Annie the furniture from the Hotel "as a slight recognition of my services - the whole of which would not be of the value of £100 at the utmost and gave to my mother (his sister) an old horse and buggy the value of which is about £15". Annie Douglas says that her sister Alice also worked for Moses TOGHILL without payment. When Ann DOUGLAS drew up the list of Assets and Liabilities she ensured that her daughters were included as Liabilities and received backdated wages for 4 years! The Inventory of Moses TOGHILL's possessions includes the stock of alcohol at the Railway Hotel. It would be interesting to know how it compares to that of the Beaufort at a similar time. I don't imagine that the Beaufort stocked 2 dozen cases of Fosters Ale! I also have a copy of the Will of Isaac TOGHILL (son of Thomas TOGHILL & Jane WATTS) who died 26 August 1891 at Chiltern Victoria, Licensed Victualler and Hotel keeper. Isaac leaves everything to Alice MELLOR, nee Douglas (one of the unpaid daughters of Ann DOUGLAS nee TOGHILL). He also forgives his sister Jane the debt of £250 which he had lent her. Needless to say, all of these docuknats came to me courtesy of Cousin Kay who has also supplied background information on the families. If anyone would like more information please let me know. Cheers Carole PS I know that Australia does not quite fit within the boundaries of the Greater Hawkesbury area but I hope you will indulge me on this one! -----Original Message----- From: R.P. & A.L.Lawrence [mailto:lawrence@hazels.u-net.com] Sent: 23 April 2005 23:31 To: ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HWK] Jane CHAPPELL formerly WATTS nee TOGHILL Hi Carole Thanks for that information about Jane TOGHILL (1834-1892). Jane's uncle Stephen Toghill Jnr was innkeeper at the Horseshoe Inn, Downend in 1833. Jane's brother Edward Toghill was publican at Kingston on Thames in 1881 Jane's brother Stephen Toghill was licensed victualler at Kingston on Thames in 1851. Jane's brother Charles Toghill was servant at the home of a publican in Chippenham in 1851. Jane's brother Isaac Toghill was hotel keeper in Chiltern, Victoria, Australia in 1891 They must have liked the life. 3. Hi Janet, In fact I had just noticed a message of yours on net year 2000 re the Fortune family and Upthorpe. Many thanks for all this information: Walter Fortune was Mayor of Monmouth 1691 BUT a list of landowners in WONASTOW about a mile out of the town of Monmouth has a WILLIAM FORTUNE 1606 which makes me wonder if his father below? They must have popped back and forth betwen two counties? Also saw : Records Carpenters Hall 1654-1694 Mary Fortune d/o Moore Fortune of Astnam to Charles Eyre date 4 Sept. 1688-178- Do you know anything about this....Astnam have not heard of it? I am glad that you have told me Heskins as I have Hoskins down......their son Revd. John Fortune m. Anne Witchell Will look up notes regarding names below but the Nelmes family also interconnect with the Witchells. Edith Nelmes m. Lawrence Witchell 29 Sept 1635 she was d/o Henry Nelmes and Elizabeth Sellman Oddly the William Witchell of Tresham m. Anne Knight( Mother Joyce Weekes Knight) I was talking of had a son William who m.2 Maria Selman 1774 from whom we descend. These names are so inter connected. It is difficult to sort them all out ! I can see I will have to look again at all the notes in more detail!!!!!!! There are notes at Gwent record office on the Moore Fortune family.....I have not seen them. Moore Fortune was Vicar of Usk and Rector of Panteg. 1. Re: [HWK] BRICE FRANCOMBE
    2. Hi Patsy and Rhonda, Pleased to have helped.... I may have a little more on the FORTUNE family but I would be most interested to know what became of Lydia FORTUNE, one of William and Elizabeth's daughters. I have notes regarding her marriage settlement, which involved land in Horsley but I haven't been able to find anything more. Her husband's name was .....LAMBE. Thanks for the added information about the various families. In the transcripts of the W-u-E parish registers HESKINS was wrongly transcribed at some points as HOPKINS.... No one believes that HESKINS exists as a name. The earliest HESKINSes I have found are in North Nibley in the mid-fifteenth century. Cheers, Janet Heskins (Surbiton, Surrey)

    3. Jim/Robert, Thank you and congratulations for distinction of adding to the Roe mss list of S m's (D3567/2/34 at CRO) which I think starts with ano JS m Eliz Mortimer at Thornbury,1558 I can add a little to Robert's analysis by qouting from John Smyth V3,p136 in a section about Cam "Four ancient dwellings in Miles Place, now of late the inheritance of John Stinchcombe, son of John,Son of Robert and Welthian, dau of John Tomlins" Now, this JT has a will,1568 with legacies to his sons-in-law inc Robert S. So it looks as though we prob have John,b1593,son of John.m1593,son of Robert,d1599(with a Tomlyns as witness in will) and a link between Cam and a short spell at Dyrham? Mention of the deer park at Dyrham reminds me of the stone wall surrounding it and wrought iron stiles for the footpath through park---my father's elder bro lived at Sands Fm,Dyrham, and used to get a handout of venison from the estate--those were the days-- Once again, many thanks for the input, which took me by surprise and now have to think about who the Camborne's were, js

    1. WEEKES FRANCOMBE WITCHELL WATTS
    2. Ronda Wicks
    3. Wonderful pieces of puzzle coming out here on these lines! :) They truly are interconnected in more ways than I think meets the eye! I have replies first to Janet and then to Patsy (with mentions of Carole, Robert and Phil too!) :) Yes Janet, I too have Moor FORTUNE as vicar in North Nibley. I have, specifically also, a record that he was the "Perpetual Curate" when he died in 1663. There is a document at the GRO that may be of interest to you in your FORTUNE researches if you don't have it already: Reference D2957/216/104 Date: 8 and 9 November 1703 Lease and Release (1) Brice WEEKES of North Nibley, yeoman (2) Tobias RUSSELL of Wickwar Tenement: orchard with the Home close (4 acres), Sturtesmead (4a.), Boxwill Hill (7a.), Spittle Croft (4a.), all in Swynhay in North Nibley. Note of livery of seizin endorsed Consideration: 5/- and £350-15s Witnesses: John NELMES, William FORTUNE, Thomas ROUS Notice that William FORTUNE signed as witness for Brice WEEKES et al I have seen the data for Wickes FORTUNE's birth and decease before and mused over its probable connection but had not followed it up - so - thankyou for that. :) You may find it interesting to note that my FRY line of Tormarton, along which line I have a 3x gt grandmother Sarah DANCEY, was sister to John DANCEY who married Frances FRANCOMB (who in turn connects to Robert MILLARD's DANCEY line). Do you connect to Robert's FRANCOMBS as well? Patsy, Your links are just as intriguing! I tend to agree with David Wicks on the connection for your Joyce WEEKES of Kilcott. He and I have been doing WICKS research together for a number of years now. What is interesting in your data is the connection to WITCHELL since my George WEEKES married Mary Witchell WATTS in Sherston M. Her parents were Nathaniel WATTS and Elizabeth WITCHELL. Elizabeth's parents were John WITCHELL and Ann HALL of Yatton Keynell and Alderton respectively. The WATTS line wanders in and out of Sherston M. and Hawkesbury through various generations. Carole and I have had exchanges in attempts to sort them out. Phil and I have exchanged data on the WITCHELL lines and their wanderings on a similar level. Oh what a mighty web these ancestors weave! (For the clothier lines this is a great play on words) It would be interesting for all of us to do DNA tests and compare photos, etc. to see just how alike we all really are! lol Ronda WICKS Ontario, Canada -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. BRICE FRANCOMBE
    2. Hi, At last, some people I know about... The FRANCOMBE family and the FORTUNE families are both connected to my HESKINS family of Wotton-under-Edge. Reference: GRO D11 93/16/1 [Deeds of the Ram Inn] - Brice FRANCOMBE had the feofeement of half a tenement and garden and orchard (with others) 12th May 1572 I don't have a note but I think that he was charged with deer hunting. From Wotton-under-Edge registers: Thomas, son of Brice FRANCOMBE baptised 8th March 1578 Katherine, daughter of Brice FRANCOMBE baptised 25th March 1581 Brice FRANCOMBE buried 12th January 1605 Edith FRANCOMBE buried 27th June 1581 Thomas NELMES married Edith FRANCOMBE 22nd August 1608 I have a copy of the will of Edith FRANCOMBE made on February 2nd 1609. She refers to a table board, lying at Richard DAWE's. This, plus other items she bequeaths to Ellinor HESKINS, wife of Nicholas HESKINS and to Richard {HESKINS} her son. She bequeathed some items to Edith NELME, her mother in law. She bequeathed some items of clothing to her sister, Katherine FRANCOMBE. Some more of her goods were lying at the house of Nicholas HESKINS and were given to his son, Richard. So, it looks as if Edith could be another of Brice FRANCOMBE's daughters and that she died soon after her marriage. Moore FORTUNE was the vicar of North Nibley. Walter FORTUNE married Katherine MEADES at W-u-E on April 21st 1681. [I believe that Walter is the family member who moved to Monmouth.] William FORTUNE [clothier] married Elizabeth HESKINS on May 17th 1692. They had a son called Weeks FORTUNE who was baptised and buried on thesame day, according to my notes, March 21st 1701. I have a note of the burial of Wickes FORTUNE, son of William and Elizabeth on May 13th 1702. The use of the name Weeks or Wickes presumably looks back at the surname of William's mother. One of the daughters of Elizabeth and William FORTUNE, Mary I think, married one of the PHILLIMOREs of Cam. Elizabeth lived with her daughter and died at Cam in her late seventies. Cheers, Janet Heskins (Surbiton, Surrey)

    3. Brice WICKS / WEEKES was yeoman in North Nibley. His wife was Elezebeth (sic) DORNY. I have the marriage record of his daughter Mary WEEKES to Moor FORTUNE dated 21 Jan 1669 in North Nibley. Mary was christened 28 Nov 1650 N.N. Brice / Brise WEEKES, yeoman was christened 11 Sep 1625 in North Nibley as a son of Brice WICKES, broadweaver. In PRO documents they are referred to as broadweaver and yeoman for differentiation as well as Brice WICKES Sr. and Jr. Brice WICKES Sr., the broadweaver, was chr in North Nibley 3 Aug 1595 as a son of William WICKES. His mother was Agnes (though she is not named on the christening record but appears in PRO records on a land transaction). The family, for these three generations, appear to have held Spittle Croft along with other lands and were referred to as being "of Swyney als. Syne" in North Nibley (an appension to the surname). I don't know if this is of help to anyone researching FORTUNE or not though; I haven't researched any FORTUNE children for Mary and Rev. Moor FORTUNE.
