Ciao Marilyn Thanks again for all your help with the WHITLOCKs of Philadelphia on the 1920 USA census. I got the last document through at 2.30 AM yesterday. Phew! Yes I am sure you are correct in assuming that Harriett is my great grandfather's sister in law person but remarried and therefore Percival WHITLOCK is a certainty as well. It was Right to discard the one Fred WHITLOCK because of age. The second Fred is about right for age but has the birth place of the mother as England which does not fit. However, it could be a scribal error or a case of the recorder asking the wrong person in the house. Once again I am very grateful that you brought this free offer to our attention and then that you went to all the bother of sending the documents when I had tech problems opening the Census. This is proof of the great success of this list and demonstrates the camaraderie that exists at its best. Three cheers for the Hawkesbury listers. Hi everyone, I've just finished transcribing a Wesleyan register for a Kent parish in which I have ancestors since there is a wonderful web site for that parish and surrounding ones, rather like Robert has for Hawkesbury. In that case the chap who run the web site has been able to get copies (photocopies/scans/digital copies) of a number of documents concerning the area from the local Record Office for the purpose of transcribing them. I wondered if we could get anything similar from Gloucestershire records Office for documents relating to Hawkesbury and surrounding parishes. If we could some of us (from what ever part of the world) could transcribe them, without the burden of a trip to England. What does everyone think? I for one would be happy to do some of the transcriptions? Would anyone be able to approach the Gloucester Records office about this? Hi All, Call off the hunt! The mysterious Mary Ann CHAPPEL, witness at the marriage of Mary Ann CHAPPELL to Hugh WATTS TOGHILL in 1875 turns out to be Mary ANN KILMISTER, daughter of Moses and Ann KILMISTER. She married Francis CHAPPELL, son of Amos CHAPPELL & Grace (FRY) at St Mary's Hawkesbury on Nov 12th 1870. Both were from Little Badminton. I have compared her signature on both certificates and am convinced that it is the same handwriting. Another child of Amos and Grace was George CHAPPELL born 1831 Little Badminton who married Jane TILLING. It is their daughter Mary Ann CHAPPELL/CHAPPLE born 28/3/1854 Pucklechurch who married Hugh Watts TOGHILL, She would have been the Aunt by marriage of Mary Ann TOGHILL(CHAPPELL) Full credit for this deduction goes to Kay who weeded out 52 Mary Ann CHAPPELLs on the 1871 census to come up with just 2 in the right area. Census details are available for Francis & Mary Ann CHAPPELL if anyone is interested. Cheers Carole -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Hi I am unsure whether or not this will actually get onto the message board, am I following the correct procedure? I am following the line of Joseph PINCOTT (my Great Grand Father) who was born in Westerleigh, South Gloucestershire around 1842. >Joseph died 08/06/1887 at Westerleigh of congestion of the lungs aged 45. >His wife was Catherine Viyard CANNONS (Father not Named) daughter of Susan CANNONS. >They married on 18 May 1873 at the Parish Church, Westerleigh. >Catherine died a widow on 25 November 1908 at the Bristol Eye Hospital aged 59 (cardiac failure, 11 days pneumonia) >The family lived in Westerleigh and had five children, according to the information I currently hold. >Those children were: > > a.. In the 1881 census George KNIGHT age 46, Cotton Spinner, born Wooten Under Edge and wife Hester age 48 born St Georges were living at 5 John St, Bristol St Philip and Jacob Out It looks as though they married in Manchester, Freebmd has a George KNIGHT marriage to Esther BRITTON in Mar 1855, and their son William aged 23 on he census was born in Manchester, the other younger children were born in Bristol I'm hoping that someone may have a connection as George was from WUE. Does anyone have them in their family? Does anyone know any more about Hester 's parents? I have a death cert for Robert BRITTON age 34 at 6 John St in 1876, and informant was Esther Knight, sister In 1881 at 6 John St, are Stephen BRITTEN 34 born St George with wife Jane and 2 children.. I am trying to check whether this Robert BRITTON is my ancestor, or whether he actually is a different Robert. My Robert is said to be deceased on the marriage cert. of his daughter Emily in Jan 1893. Best wishes Caroline
Thanks Richard for your help.It looks extremly encouraging. I note that I have come across Teagle/Pincott twice so far on my research. Sorry Carole about that very short email - I hit the wrong button! It's about Mary Ann CHAPPELL who married Hugh WATTS in 1873. I have her marrying Joseph TIDY in 1887 in Brighton. She had two children by him - Joseph born 1887 in America and George born 1889 in Brighton. Joseph senior died in 1889 in Brighton aged 33 Census 1891 86 Washington Street St Peter Brighton Sussex Tidy Mary A head 36 widow charwoman Pucklechurch Toghill Rose dau 10 Chipping Sodbury Walter son 7 Chipping Sodbury Tidy Joseph son 4 Boston USA (British Subject) George son 2 Brighton Mary then married Henry WATTS in 1894. Henry is the first cousin once removed of her first husband Hugh WATTS TOGHILL. Hugh’s mother Jane and Henry’s grandfather John were siblings. They had four children as shown on the census below. Census 1901 2 Sunneyside Cottages Brockley Somerset Watts Henry head 39 ag lab Tresham Gloucestershire Mary Ann wife 45 Pucklechurch Gloucestershire Sidney Joseph s.son 14 USA Boston George s.son 12 Brighton Sussex Watts Charles son 6 Siston Gloucestershire Alice dau 5 Siston Gloucestershire Elsie dau 2 Backwall Somerset Ethel dau 1 Backwall Somerset I've been intrigued about the possibilty of Alfred and Daniel being one and the same. Regards Nikki
Hi Sue Thanks for your Mary Ann CHAPPELL offerings. Kay has sent me some details of Mary Ann CHAPPELL born 1847 Littleton Drew which eliminates her from the list of possible witnesses to the 1875 TOGHILL/CHAPPELL marriage. Mary Ann CHAPPELL married George PEGLER Jun Q 1866 Chippenham 5a 113. Here are the various Census details: 1861 at the Plough Inn, Littleton Drew, Wiltshire: Grace CHAPPELL Head 54 Widow West Kington Wiltshire Victualler (c 1807) Mary Ann CHAPPELL Dau 14 Single Littleton Drew Wiltshire (c 1847) Hannah CHAPPELL Dau 12 Single Littleton Drew Wiltshire (c 1849) 1871 Census at Littleton Drew Wiltshire: George PEGLER Head 31 Tormarton Gloucestershire Ag Lab (c 1840) Mary Ann PEGLER Wife 24 Littleton drew Wiltshire (c 1847) In the 1871 Census Grace CHAPPELL and her daughter Hannah CHAPPELL were still at the Plough Inn Littleton Drew Wiltshire. George PEGLER and Mary Ann at Acton Turville in the 1881 Census, apparently no children. In 1891 Census George PEGLER is a Widower Mary Ann PEGLER died Dec Q 1888 aged 41 Chippenham 5a 37 Cheers Carole -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Hi Marilyn, I knew you wouldn't be able to resist finding out more about the goat! I spotted this in an old Journal of the Gwent Family History Society. "Extracts from the Monmouthshire Merlin 1st May 1891 This day's Police - Newport Borough Before Mr H PHILLIPS & Counc. D A VAUGHAN Goat Straying Henry HULBERT was summoned for allowing a goat to stray in Commercial Road. Police Constable FOSTER saw the goat butting several people. Defendant said he was feeding it to kill it and Mr KESSICK told him to keep it tied up. Dismissed with a caution." You should be able to find him (but not the goat) on the 1891 census, so that might help to identify him. Best of luck! Carole -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn Moffat [mailto:marilyn@moffat-mk.co.uk] Sent: 14 June 2005 09:59 To: ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HWK] Henry HULBERT Hi Carol No I don't know of a Henry Hulbert - but I just have to know, now you've mentioned the goat :-)) For everyone else: As you know, (and if you don't, you will soon) I have a mystery which links Hawkesbury to Newport Monmouthshire and Carole has been very helpful over the years in trying to solve it. I have made more progress - not necessarily in the right direction, so I think I will restate the story. You will have to bear with me as you will see my family gives new meaning to the expression "extended family"!!! My grandad was born in 1865 in Hawkesbury and married in Cheltenham in 1921 - and was 65 when my Dad was born. We therefore started doing our Family History to fill in the gaps and understand the various passing relatives that my Dad met, but never had a clear vision of where they fitted in to the family. Grandad left my Dad various notebooks (his accounts from Kingscote are on CD at Archive CD Books) and in one of these these are addresses including a Mr E Hulbert at St Woollos Monmouthshire. (This is a suburb of Newport now) For a long time I believed this was my grandad's cousin Edwin John HULBERT born 1849 (yes- his mother Grace was 15 years older that grandad's father James). I now think he (Mr E ) was another member of my family, but I have never found out who. This is because I'm now fairly convinced that Edwin went first to Tewkesbury (where he married) and then to a farm at Awre near Blakeney in the Forest of Dean - it took a long time to track him down because of the quaint transcripts of Edwin's accented rendition of Hawkesbury as well as his propensity to be called or to call himself John and Edward. This fits with a report that my grandad's only comment when my cousin John was named was "I had once an uncle called John" (this is still the only Hulbert named John that I have found). This is all very enigmatic and to be honest still drives me crazy from time to time. If however anyone on the list comes across anything remotely related or helpful, I'd appreciate the info... one day it might all fit together!!!! Thank you for listening :-)) Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "ANTHONY SHARP" <sharpafc@btinternet.com> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2005 6:58 AM Subject: [HWK] Henry HULBERT > For Marilyn especially! > > Do you know of a Henry HULBERT who was in Newport, MON in 1891? > > If so, do you know about his goat??
