    3. Hi John Welcome to the list! There is a place called Brentry which is fairly close to W-o-T in Bristol - I wonder if this could be the "Brenting" you mention. I know nothing of the area, or of the home you mention, other than the fact that an aunt of mine used to live there. W-o-T and Brentry were quite well to do areas. There is another Westbury locally but its in Wiltshire. I think the Bristol is your most likely candidate. Hope someone can help. Regards John. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.296 / Virus Database: 267.9.6 - Release Date: 27/07/2005

    1. Frank Toghill French
    2. R.P. & A.L.Lawrence
    3. Further meanderings in the London Gazette found the following about Frank Toghill French. He was the grandson of Ann Britten Toghill, who was baptised at Hawkesbury on 15th September 1814, the daughter of Stephen toghill and Mary Britten. In 1901, Frank Toghill French was an ironmonger at Witney, Oxon, but he subsequently emigrated to the U.S., and lived at Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he died in 1925. He is recorded several times on the Ellis Island website. Here is some more about him: NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership lately subsisting between us the undersigned, Henry Long, William Henry Long, and Frank Toghill French, carrying on business as Ironmongers, at Witney, under the style or firm of HENRY LONG AND SONS, has been dissolved by mutual consent as and from the 23rd day of May, 1905, so far as regards the said Frank Toghill French, who retires from the firm. All debts due to and owing by the said late firm will be received and paid by the said Henry Long and William Henry Long, who will continue the said business under the present style or firm of Henry Long and Sons.—Dated this 30th day September, 1905. HENRY LONG. FRANK T. FRENCH. WILLIAM HY. LONG. The London Gazette archives are fascinating if you have an unusual surname to search with. Apart from armed service promotions, there are enquiries by solicitors organising probate, bankruptcies and the winding-up of companies. 1. TOGHILL and CHAPPELL
    2. R.P. & A.L.Lawrence
    3. Hi Wandering round the Internet, I came across a website containing the London Gazette (and the Edinburgh Gazette and Belfast Gazette). It is at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ My usual search term for any website is TOGHILL, and this brought up several responses, some of which I investigated. It was not always straightforward to find the entry on the PDF file, but one I did trace was an entry from a solicitor looking for possible beneficaries of an estate. The person named was Helen Elizabeth Darracott Chappell TOGHILL, retired headmistress of "Ty Newydd", Heol Trelau, Ely, Cardiff. She died 26th February 1972, and a check of 1837online showed that she was born on 11th August 1883. A bit late to claim an inheritance, I suppose, but I wonder who she was. 3. Dear Carole. I'm sure I will be, the generation before I have several Male Worlock's but only know my direct line downwards. She is probably a cousin or similar. My Worlock's farmed at Coomb on the Edge of Wotton Under Edge and the Worlock's at Wotton seem to be linked. There is an Ann born in 1755 who we thought was married to John Pitt but who knows for sure? I'm trying to check these links but will probably have to go to the record office to do so. (I now live in Hampshire). I am definately related to the Worlock's buried in Ozleworth & Tresham Churchyard. Do you know any relatives of Ann as this would help me tie her in? Are you on the genesconnected site as if so I can give you access to my tree if you email me. If you search for me Jane Mary Louise Worlock and email through the site I can open it. Otherwise let me know. 3. Hi Richard Yes indeed " Hanbury" another form of Hawkesbury I have a file somewhere that I have kept for different spellings my favorite is "Oxbrey" its perfectly phonetic. This Benjamin STINCHCOMBE was born 1801 to John S and Mary CULL his second wife (Elizabeth STINCHCOMBE was his first) at Hawkesbury. so is related to just about all of us. The reason for Benjamin's visit with his daughter Caroline at Malmesbury, I think was to visit Ellenor ENGLISH who I think is also his daughter b,Hawkesbury 1830. she is also listed as Ellen in 1841. regards Robert Visit my web pages at http://www.hawkesburyhistory.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Teagle" <richardt@wales.ac.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 11:29 AM Subject: [HWK] Benjamin STINCHCOMB in Malmesbury > In the course of following up Ellen ENGLISH near Malmesbury, who I think > might be Ellen TEAGLE, born Hawkesbury Upton 1831, daughter of Thomas > TEAGLE/Ruth PRITCHARD, I came across them in this household on a > transcript of the 1861 census.
