    2. Hi All I know about ELIZABETH THOMPSON is that she was probably born about 1778 or if you check the 1851 census 1781. There is a burial recorded in the Hawkesbury Parish Register on 22.11.1863 of an ELIZABETH CARTER aged 86 and although I do not have a copy of the certificate dates would tie up and this may be one and the same. 3. Ok Janet and Geoffro - Ddon't get too excited or upset if this contradicts anything , but I have a copy of a hand written family tree from a branch of the Carter family. This is mostly done from word of mouth and research made by a descendant of that line and was given to my father. I have not had a chance to check any of it or even transcribe it, but the link is to a JAMES CARTER who was the brother of THOMAS CARTER who married a Martha - I do not have a surname but I suspect it might be your Martha Winbow? This tree lists the parents of Thomas and James as Thomas CARTER and Ann REED married 25/9/1797. The grandson of this James went by the fabulous name of JOHN THOMAS DEBRELL CARTER (!) and married Emily THOMPSON - and here I'm on solid ground as I know that their daughter Ethel was the source of a lot of the info - I met the lady in the late 1960's just before she died, when my dad was doing some ancestor hunting, and tracked the family down. If you want this info and the stuff that came with it I will try and get it into a GEDCOM file so you can see and judge for yourselves. There is one other link (I've just noticed - JAMES (b. 1805) seems to have married and Ann HOWELL. 3. I have forwarded the message below from the GLS list as it may be of use especially to Jill WISEMAN to whom I apologise for my delay in responding. The time I have spent at the pc this week has been considerably less than usual as one of the legs broke off my chair. The new one arrives tomorrow. Also have been chasing a breakthrough on the SHIPWAY families and hope in the next day or two to unite 3 separate Australians with their long lost rellies. Blame this on Kaye PURNELL whose fantastic work on the emigrants to Aus set the ball rolling. Thanks Kaye. Any listers attend the GFHS fair at the end of next month who would like to meet there for a chat etc please let me know. All others keep your fingers crossed that I come back with fiche reader. Mummy is working on Daddy for me. If you are still awaiting answers from me they will arrive soon. 1. [[Hawks]] Re: [[Hawks]] Janet WILSON and her CARTER's
    2. Hi Geoffro Thanks for your email re the CARTERS. Yes, some of those listed on your surname list are indeed related to me. My line starts with ANN CARTER date of birth and parents unknown. She appears to have had 14 children and each time, according to the parish register it states reputed father THOMAS HUNT. My research for some years lead me to conclude that I was a direct descendant of their first born JAMES CARTER (1777) who married ELIZABETH THOMPSON 6.2.1803. Certain pieces of information that have come to light in the last year have made me change my theory. ANN CARTER and THOMAS HUNT had a daughter MARY CARTER bap. 10.8.1788 therefore making her by 1807 approx. 19 years old. In Gloucester Record Office I found some information relating to a MARY CARTER of the same age from the village of Hawkesbury who had a male bastard child on 24.1.1807 by THOMAS SIMS of Stroud who's occupation is recorded as Butcher. No baptism recorded in the I.G.I. THOMAS CARTER married MARTHA WINBOW on the 14.12.1828 at Hawkesbury. They went on to have 8 children some of which appear on your CARTER list. The children are as follows: SARAH CARTER bap. 1.8.1830 married WORTHY HOPKINS 2.6.1852 at Clifton Register Office Bristol. GEORGE CARTER bap. 14.10.1832 JOHN CARTER my 2 X G. Grandfather born 18.12.1834 - information from family bible - bap. 22.2.1835 - married MARY ANN WOODHAM 14.3.1868 Marshfield. JANE CARTER bap. 5.3.1837 married HENRY STNCHCOMBE at Wickwar on 4.11.1865 ENOCH CARTER bap.29.9.1839 - burial 21.6.1857. HANNAH CARTER bap. 18.4.1844 GILES CARTER bap. 6.6.1847 - married DRUCILLA HOWELL 27.10.1866 - died 18.12.1826 - information re date of death metal cross in Hawkesbury Churchyard. ELIZA MARY CARTER bap. 6.6.1847 - burial 22.1.1852 MARTHA CARTER nee WINBOW died 22.2.1848 from 'disease of the spine'. In 1855 THOMAS CARTER remarried and took as his new wife ELIZA PRICE who like him had been widowed. THOMAS CARTER is recorded on the marriage certificate (no. 202) as being 47 years of age and his father as THOMAS SIMS butcher. The witnesses to this marriage were WORTHY and SARAH HOPKINS his daughter and son in-law. I therefore conclude that this THOMAS CARTER was not the one born to JAMES CARTER and ELIZABETH THOMPSON. What do you think? Janet

    1. [[Hawks]] CHAPPELL & EDWARDS
    2. kat
    3. Hi Geoffro and List Thought I'd add my two connections to the CHAPPELL discussion. My Gt grandmother was Eliza Chappell, bap 1826 at Oldbury-on-the-Hill, daughter of Charles Chappell (c1787-1842) & his wife Hester BOXWELL (1786-1852) who were married in 1821 at Oldbury. Eliza seems to have been their only child. Sometime between the birth of Eliza in 1826 and the census of 1841 the family moved to Rangeworthy. In 1851 Eliza Chappell married Aaron EDWARDS Jr son of Aaron Edwards Sn who was born in Hawkesbury in 1782. My other Chappell connection is a Mary Ann CHAPPELL who had a natural daughter Sabina in 1841 and then married William EDWARDS in 1844. They were the parents of Peter Edwards the local carter in Hawkesbury. William was a first cousin to the above Aaron Jr. If you or anyone know of the above families I'd love to hear from them. I'd be particularly interested to find out what happened to Sabina. I have all the census details on the above from 1841-1891. Thanks Kerrie NSW Australia

    3. Hello Ronda Don't know if it will help you, but here is an address I picked up off another list. Happy hunting Carole. Hello everyone, in September last year I started to build a free web site dedicated to identifying military photographs, in an attempt to repay some of the generous help that I have received from Genealogists generally and Rootsweb listers in particular. This site was initially to be for the Counties of Leicestershire and Rutland, but (due to requests) is now open to anyone with a military interest in Great Britain and its war time allies. Many of us are lucky enough to own treasured photographs of groups or single portraits of military personnel of the W.W.1 and W.W2 era and with luck, earlier "gems" of this sort. How many times have you and your family looked at these wonderful old photographs and wondered who your ancestors comrades were ? What Regiment etc. did they belong to? When and where the photograph was taken ? 'Military Images' is set up to offer "on line" pages to display these photographs in the hope that other site visitors can help with identification etc. Perhaps you have in your possession photographs that you can scan that are a partial or complete mystery ? Perhaps (like me) you can identify your own relative/s within the group but none of his/her comrades? Perhaps some of these "unknown servicemen" are lost relatives or people that may have passed on information about your ancestors military career to their families. The web site now contains this type of material and other information and links etc. As of today (Fri. 11 Feb. 2000), the site holds photo/scans of some 1,586 UNIDENTIFIED INDIVIDUALS, plus many more that only the barest facts are known. There is also, a list of 812 transcribed names from War Memorials etc. (many of the memorials have been photographed and these scans are "on site"). Please do bear in mind that in WW1 in particular, where a soldier was living at the time of his volunteering or conscription often had no bearing on which Regiment etc. he was posted to. (or if he was killed where he was buried). So a soldier who perhaps volunteered or was conscripted in Devon could be posted to a Yorkshire Regiment. I hope that you will take the time to have a look at the web site, who knows? you may find "one of your own" there. I hope also that some of you will consider sending in photographs that you would like to receive help with. Good luck and good hunting ! >From Roger Capewell, in Derbyshire, England. rojanne@capefam.freeserve.co.uk 'Military Images' Web Site at :- Http://www.capefam.freeserve.co.uk/militaryimages.htm Researching CAPEWELL/CAPWELL anywhere, any time. ______________________________ - --------------------------------------------------- Click here for Free Video!! http://www.gohip.com/freevideo/

    2. Hi Adrian, I wonder if there is any connection between your CHAPPLEs and this marriage from Long Newnton: Zebulon HAREWELL yeoman of Charlton, Malmesbury married Mary CHAPEL also of Charlton, young woman by licence at Long Newnton on 24 Feb 1747. The bondsman was John CLARK alias HILLIER, labourer of Brokenborough. Why they both married at Long Newnton is a puzzle, but we're fairly certain Zeb's father died while he was young and he may have moved in with his uncle Charles (long story). Afraid we have nothing else on these CHAPELs yet, but are working on it! Cheers... Ken Murray in New York

They were called the Hawkesbury Volunteers. How voluntary was service? What age did people join? What age did they stop serving? How far away might recruits come from?
