Hi Karen My experience is that it is very common. I have 3 William SANDFORDs being born to one couple. The first two did die. Interestingly, I think it was yesterday at Hawkesbury I came across an 1881 family with 2 children both called Ann (or mary) the first was Ann E and the 2nd was Ann M. Geoffro
For Geoff (Paul please forward) As a result of Paul Tandy's note I went to your webpage to look at Tandy, because I have an interest. I was astonished to find Gulwell there. I have Mary in my tree and can tell you she was baptised 3rd Aug 1690. They also had a son named Matthew, who I assume was born abt 1714. I made this assumption from finding two Matthew Pincott burials at Hawkesbury. John was baptised 24 Jul. 1720. Then you have the Hulberts from Biddestone. Ann Cook it is not Cork, is dau of Samuel Cook and Ann Stinchcombe. She was bap 22 April 1798, Hawkesbury. My main interest is Cook but not those you've listed. I've fwd your webpage to Marilyn Moffat for her interest in Biddestone Hulberts. George & Ann's son James is her gggf. Marilyn knew about Grace's two children but she didn't have when Grace married nor to whom, so you've sorted that for her. So you've provided some very useful stuff and I hope these bits and pieces are useful to you. Brian Morgan
Hi A couple of years ago I wrote to Hawkesbury Primary School and Horton CE VA School asking if they could possibly look in their school registers and see if they could supply me with any information with regard to my CARTER ancestors. Both schools were very obliging and furnished me with some useful information. I was invited to take a look at the Hawkesbury registers and would love to do so as I am sure there is a wealth of information to be found within, unfortunately, I do not live locally but wondered if someone who does and has the time and the interest would consider this as a worth while project recording the information contained within so it could be made available to all with connections to Hawkesbury. Is this a feasible idea? Janet
Below is a mail from Stephen GADD who sent it to the list from a different email address that with which he is subscribed. For those of you who do not know the BUTLERs once held the manor of Hawkesbury for a time in the 17C. The question is Stephen is do you have records of a THOMPSON marriage to Henry GALE ??? Hello, everyone. I've been in contact with Geoffro before, but this is my > first posting to the list to let you know where exactly my interests lie. > James BUTLER of Horton married Elizabeth THOMPSON of Hawkesbury in 1773. I > think Elizabeth was the daughter of James & Mary, baptised at Hawkesbury in > 1743, and this is as far as I've got with the THOMPSONs. > However, I do have quite a bit on the BUTLERs and REEDs of Horton, and on > the GALEs of Tormarton, all of whom presumably married into Hawkesbury > families, so please get in touch if you'd like me to see if I have anything > that might help. > Best wishes, > Stephen
>Just in case anyone feels like swotting up on the Australian Hawkesbury (which is more a region, referring to the historic early settlement area along the Hawkesbury River in New South Wales, near Sydney), here is a nice URL: >http://www.angelfire.com/id/alana/ghosts.html< Thank you Linda! Wonderful reading.... If any listers are interested in that other historic Hawkesbury I can recommend a visit. When I lived in Sydney I loved driving along the Hawkesbury's gorge from Wiseman's Ferry to Mangrove Mountain, incredibly beautiful steep sandstone cliffs with a wide, lazy winding river flanked by orchards. The haunted pub at Wiseman's Ferry makes wonderful lunches (I guess I have a thing for haunted pubs). Just avoid the rental cabins further downriver:- crawling with funnel web spiders! The houseboats you can rent from Brooklyn are a better bet. I wonder if the Hawkesbury's all over the world can coordinate some regular simultaneous celebrations, like all the Strouds do with their annual brick-throwing contests? Perhaps a pond-dipping contest? Cheers... Ken M.
Hi Brian, Marilyn et al Welcome to the list and thnak you for the info re Mary GULWELL who is 6th G Grandmother to my partner Dawn THOMPSON, Marily MOFFAT and lister Doug THOMPSON who loves this list so much he has subscribed to it twice with different email addresses since his return from his holiday. Would love to know your connection to Mary GULWELL. I am also in touch with descendants of Mary who are not list members and more than a dozen other Hawkesbury researchers who are not list members. Spoke to Marilyn again on the phone briefly this morning whcih reminds me to mention to her that Orange End is also on the latest OS map. Talk soon Geoffro
It appears that I the Great and Glorious Pond Dipper should leave my computer and go on holiday more frequently as not only have we 6 new listers since last week but my absence has also created the conditions for cooperation and success. Given the number of new listers I should introduce myself and the rules that apply to this list. My name is Geoff (ro) BRIGHTMAN aged 38 living in Bristol. Arthritis all joints so don't work. My Hawkesbury interests are my partners family ( at this stage). Her name is Dawn THOMPSON. The web page at http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/amusement/adrenaline/17/ was a working file posted to share information more easily with a cousin. It is fortunate it is there as I lost all my computer data at Christmas last year. The web page is always worth checking for any Hawkesbury family. Be advised it is known that there are some mistakes. If you spot a mistake there please let me know. As listowner I was christened the Pond Dipper because I threatened a ducking in the village pond outside Poole Farm House to any list member who broke my rules. The rules are simple. Surnames in UPPER CASE ALWAYS. Post and ask about anything to do with Hawkesbury (inc. surrounding villages) history or family history. The boundaries are very lax ( much like the GLS/WILTS border near Hawkesbury). The aim of the list is to help Hawkesbury researchers in their quests. We have in less than 2 months reunited families, found new family members and solved long standing problems for some listers. Another of my web pages at http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/meltingpot/gregory/436/ is an index of documents relating to Hawkesbury folk held at various record offices. It is well worth studying despite its slow loading time. Be advised to try all known name variants and even some unknown name variants. Apart from the information on the web pages I also hold a great deal of other info on Hawkesbury families past, present and future and am more than happy to share info through the list. Thats why I started it. All listers are actively encouraged to share and help as much as possible. I am currently working on a couple of indexing projects of Hawkesbury records and these will be made available as and when complete. That's about it for now Geoffro
I'd bet my last Pond Dipping that that is the best idea I have heard this year. As soon as they return to school next week I will be in touch with them. Go to the top of the class Geoffro
Hello Brian, The only Ann RODWAY's I can find are Ann baptised 1770, daughter of Charles RODWAY and Charity COLE. She was the sister of my ancestor Stephen RODWAY. Stephen had a daughter called Ann baptised 1805 and married John HABGOOD at Cricklade, Wilts. Let me know if you find any link. Hi Geoff and happy easter, Did you mention to me some time back that you had some information about the TANDY name around your area? I would be very grateful for anything you may have expecially around the 15/16/1700s. Best wishes Paul Tandy

Hi Paul, Apologies I thought I had mailed you this. TANDY info I have can be found at http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/amusement/adrenaline/17/ What TANDY info do you have for Hawkesbury ?? Geoffro
Hi Geoffro, Many thanks for the info about moving things by canal... good to know it's a possibility and I will follow up. Perhaps I will become known as "the Cotsold Canal Dipper"? Cheers... Ken M.
Do you have details of the marriage? Brian Morgan
Dear Gary, I too am interested in the DAVIS'S of HAWKESBURY, but mine are no earlier than 1791, when JOB DAVIS, son of ROBERT DAVIS and BETTY was Christened. I have JOB'S children, but know nothing of the DAVIS family from HAWKESBURY before that. Any connection? I have a record of 2 children born to Grace HULBERT - Emily Jane HULBERT (1847) amd Edwin John HULBERT. Grace later married and lived in Newington Bagpath, but in 1851, she had already moved to Bagpath, where she worked in the household of Daniel Holborow. In 1851 Edwin is listed in Hillesley, as grandson of John PITT and Sarah Ann. The household doesn't contain any sons of an age that might be his father - and the IGI can only find 3 daughters of John and Sarah Ann (Clarissa,Drusilla and Rachel(?)) the former 2 are living with their parents in 1851. Question 1) - can anyone suggest a candidate for Edwin's father? Question 2) - Can anyone suggest what may have happened to Emily? I haven't yet forund a burial record for her ... TIA - Marilyn Moffat Milton Keynes
Has anyone out there come across the following person(s)? Jane HULBERT was the youngest daughter of George and Ann HULBERT, christened in Hawkesbury Glos 3 March 1842. Up until now I have been concentrating on her brothers who are missing, trying to link them with my father's memories of stories. Whilst he remembers the offspring of her sisters Ann and Grace, he wasn't even aware of this female sibling. I therefore suspect she may have died, but perhaps not in Hawkesbury? There is no evidence on the indexes or census including 1851 - her parents weren't living in Glos at that time either, so I suspect they moved out for a while, perhaps back to Wiltshire where George was born. They were however both buried in Hawkesbury churchyard - he died in 1874. Alternatively she married and stayed away, hence my grandfather never got the chance to meet her, and so never talked of her. TIA, Marilyn Milton Keynes
Hello All, I see you have all been busy whilst I have been away. I will be replying to all the messages later today and tomorrow (I haven't unpacked yet). This is just a quickie mostly for Ken Murray. After chatting to numerous canal people over the weekend the consensus is that yes it is possible that your machinery may have been moved by canal. I think that there is a list somewhere that deals with boat people and they may help. Alternatively its history books to find the boat companies and hope that they have records in the local reocrd offices - whcih could be one of several as canals tend to cross county boundaries. Good hunting. Geoffro
